My trainer told me I cant ride in the show because I'm African American

I feel like it’s really unfair that my trainer told me I can’t ride in the show because "The equestrian community isn't ready for people like me" as she said. I really love to ride and have been riding for 11 years. Have any other people had problems like this? What do I do about this? I have shown before and placed very well. The last show she took the students to she seemed ashamed of me because of my race. I love showing and riding and I really love horses. I do hunter/jumper and dressage. Any advice? Should I move barns, but if I do I can’t do jumping because it is the only hunter/jumper barn that is close to me :(

  1. You need to go to the show comittee and COMPLAIN.

and the Equestrian Council for your area (like the Ontario Equestrien Federation if you were in Ontario) and COMPLAIN

This "trainer" should lose her papers and be barred from showing and Teaching.

Right now there is a black rider on the Olympic Dressage Team for Brazil - so NO there is no law.

The trainer is a Disgusting ***** and should NOT be around children with that attitude.

Kinda like the moron on here with the pig comment...

  2. oh dear god! i am so sorry for you. i have been in the county show ring for years also competing local for years and have never heard anything so disgraceful!  yes it is isn't common to see however it does not matter!

get yourself out there! if thats what you want to do then do it.

don't ever let anybody tell you you can't because of your colour

  3. I'm sorry that is horrible no one should every do that but what you can do is talk to some one or try to find the phone number of the people who are making the show call the Judges talk to them couse you have a right to be in the show. I hope i could help.?dont put up with it!!!!!!!

  4. Is there any way you can change trainers and stay at the same barn ?

What she is saying is racist BS and you should call her on it. Get your parents involved and talk to the Barn owner. File a serious complaint about it.

She should not be allowed to treat you in such a way.

Equestrian community not ready for people like you - my eye, - total BS.

    Go for it girl.

    Kick her racist butt

  5. tell the manager/owner of the barn i bet you if you're telling the truth (which i bet you are) she will get fired. im sorry to hear you were mistreated like that

  6. That's ridiculous! Your trainer sounds racist to me... At every show, there are plenty of colored people. I'm sorry you were put through this... You should definitely talk to your trainer. Hope this helps! :)

  7. Your trainer is an idiot.  MOVE to another BARN.  any barn that would hire an idiot like your trainer is owned by an idiot.  there is no place in society for idiots like your trainer.  have i been clear enough??

is there a dressage barn near you?   do you have a drivers licence to travel a bit to another barn?    Which do you ride,  jumper or hunter or dressage?  there HAS to be another barn near you!!???

i would report her to the USEF, USPC, AHJS, and any other horse related club, society, affiliation, anything!  i would send a copy of all letters i send out to the barn and trainer.  i would be pissed!  i would not take this !

  8. well thats dumb because i have seen african americans show. talk to your trainer about it tell her how u feel if not consider moving barns. maybe you will find you like a different style you like more

  9. You should contact the NAACP or the EEOC and file complaints. I didn't think that type of mentality existed today. That trainer should be run out out of the horse industry. I would get your friends and protest at the barn. I sure wouldn't let this pass. This is totally wrong.

Here is a link to the NAACP

  10. That's terrible. Your trainer is the problem as she is a downright racist. I'd confront her about it and if she denies being racist, I'd write to the press with your story because racism is soooooo nasty and ridiculous they'd be more than willing to show your story. Good luck!

  11. You really need to go to a diffrent barn. There is no reason for your trainer to be like that. I'm sorry that she is.

I'm sure that there is another barn close to you that does hunter/jumper. Just look around more.

You might also want to report her to what ever organizations she belongs to, the bbb, ect...Also, if you haven't already. Talk to your parents. Tell them what is goin on. They will be able to help you more than any of us here can.

  12. Simple! Get another trainer. You don't have to put up with this person. I do hope that there is another place/person nearby to train you instead as it is not good for you (or anyone else for that matter) being around this person. Personally I would travel a hundred miles to get away from her!   <3

  13. Omg, that's horrible! I would suggest trying to find another trainer. Or doing what ~Prancingponies~ and/or Shmicklet said.

I wish you the BEST of luck!

  14. That is horrible. I would drop that trainer, and go find a new barn. Ask if you can maybe bring some jumps to another barn so you can practice for shows. I'm sure if you made sure that they were out of the way after you rode, they would be fine with that. I'm really sorry :( good luck

  15. hi i have been showing horses for a while and i think that is c**p if you wanna show your horse go ahead and do it there is no rule saying serton nationallatys can not ride in shows

  16. there is no excuse for racism.there are many notable African Americans in equine history and one of my favorite people was Bill Picket and throughout my rodeo career i always rode with my "good luck hat" that was a Bill Picket Stetson.real cowboys don't care what color your skin is or if you have an accent ,you are gaged on your work and how you perform your tasks.this country was built on the backs of the workers and most of them were African Americans and they have more than proven their place in america.this has always been a sore subject with me and will always get my fire up when it happens.as far as your trainer is concerned,i would contact your local NAACP office and tell them about your problem ,she will have something that she really should think twice about after they get hold of her and if they dont i know a couple hundred cowboys that will change her mind for her.

  17. I would have to ask your trainer how he or she, as a member of the equestrian community, was ready to take your money for lessons and such but not for competition.

If your race is indeed the issue, and not your riding ability, then this is atrocious.

Is this the only h/j trainer in the area?  Even though there may not be another barn, you might find a trainer working out of a private stable.  Regardless, I would not give a dime to this trainer, not one more, and I'd tell all my friends to do the same.

  18. THAT IZ VERY VERY VERY RACIST OF YOUR TRAINER TO DO THAT!..IF I WERE YOU  IWOULD TELL MY PARENTS TO GO AND TALK TO THE TRAINER ABOUT IT!..THAT IZ VERY UNFAIR!..IF HE STILL DOESNT CARE THEN IM SURE YOU CAN FIND ANOTHER TRAINER!

  19. who cares about the discipline you do, get a new trainer for pete's sake!!! you need to have a trainer that cares for and respects her students. if it is YOUR OWN horse then enter the frickin dang show and show her that she's being a you know what. if the show is being held by a club or association then talk to the president about it. isn't there a law or something about that kind of stuff? i think there is, so you can sue her or something.

  20. That is outrageous! I cant believe she actually said that... How racist. Stick up for yourself and enter in the show anyway. There is no reason you shouldnt go for it!

  21. she is a rasict twit. Ignore her, Im white and some of my best friends are dark I hate rasict people they really should stop being so full of themselves and get a friggin life.  If you love horses and love your sport nothing else matters,  move barns and tell the prat to go talk to some dark riders that are BETTER than HER.

    grrr, ignore her honeyyy

    xx

  22. Expose her for the racist she is, if you tell others in your comminuty about it she will let you show for the sake of her career. At the very least you will ruin her, people like that should not be teaching, let alone even exist on this planet.

  23. it is unfair and it is false i know a lot of African americans that ride on Eudora on saterday nights

  24. your trainer is just plain racist.

  25. Your trainer is just a racist. Get a new trainer or go it alone because there is no rule that says only people of a certain race can compete in shows.

  26. THAT IS JUST A MASSIVE LOAD OF RACIST BULLCRAP!!!!!

Tell your trainer to stick it up her white supremacist **** and rotate on it. because you'll be at the show taking home the ribbons!!

  27. sue for racial discrimination!   this shouldn't be tolerated at all especially if your a good rider.  the color of your skin should not determine if you ride or not!

I'm sorry this just infuriates me!

  28. your trainer is a total prick!!! what a nasty thing to say.

i think you should move barns ( if your trainer is at your current one) and forget about her and go and compete :)

    good luck

  29. I THINK Y00H SH0ULD TELL Y00HR M0M T0 G0 TALK T0 HER.......THAT IS VERY RUDE AND Y00H SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT T0 G0 0N THAT SH0W......MY SISTER USED T0 RIDE HORSES BUT THAT NEVER HAPPENED TO HER I THINK THAT IS VERY RUDE AND PURE RACISM...I AM SURE Y00H C0ULD FIND A NEW TRAINER THAT CAN SEE H0W G00D Y00H ARE!!! I HOPE Y000H CAN GET 0N THAT SH0W AND SH0W HER THAT SHE WAS WR0NG!!!

  30. If there are no rules saying only white people can be in the show, stick it out. Do whatever you can to stay. Stick up for yourself. Racism is an idiotic, ignorant way of dealing with fear of something different. I hope you change that barn.

  31. Like h**l the equestrian community isn't ready for people like you. d**n straight you should change barns! It might even help to change disciplines.
