Question:

My truck vs. a new hybrid?

I have a 2001 Ford Lightning which has been cared for and even lavished attention upon. In effect, I love my truck. After a family friend being seriously injured and near death in a head on collision which she had no control over as a man on the other side of the road fell asleep and veered into her vehicle (an SUV) she was told that without the SUV she would have been dead as the man in the Focus that hit her died. Please don't bring up an argument that her car killed him because she was also informed that the mini cooper behind her would have lost it's 2 passengers if it had been hit instead.

Besides my fear of small vehicles, I refuse to buy foreign.

So, if I got rid of my truck, what would I buy that would make the trade worth it?

Thanks

  1. A Ford Escape Hybrid.  It gets 34 mpg and is a safe and reliable vehicle to drive.

  2. Nothing.  There is not an American made hybrid right now that will offset what you will lose in the trade + depreciation of the new vehicle.

Wait for a couple more years and hopefully the big 3 will catch up with Toyota and Honda technology.

  3. Do you even know what the crash test information for an 01 F150 is? it's poor. Just because it's big doesn't mean it's safe. Some types of accidents can be just as deadly in a truck or SUV, if not more deadly. The idea that larger is always safer isn't true.

  4. Well, just look at the safety features.

Of course bigger cars are more of a guarantee, but wihtout the safety features, they're just as dangerous as any other car because they are easier to flip over.

Try a Ford Escape hybrid, those are pretty good cars, they're ford, and it gets decent MPG.

And if you dont like that, wait till 09,2010 and ford will release the FORD EDGE hybrid, which is more stylish and roomier.

  5. GET ANOTHER TRUCK OR A SUV.JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING HAPPENED TO A FRIEND DOESNT MEAN ITLL HAPPEN TO YOU .IF U WANT A CAR GET ONE.

  6. You're likely to be better off with your truck if it is paid off or close to it.  Paying less for gas doesn't do anything to help your budget if you're slapped with a $600 payment for a new hybrid.  The trade isnt worth when you figure total cost of ownership.

As a fellow enthusiast, no one is going to pay what you think the truck is worth.  If you're trying to ease your budget, buy some old Honda or Toyota and drive that.  Hybrids are a crock anyways.  You're using gas over 25mph, and where does that big *** battery go when it wont hold a charge anymore?  My guess is a landfill.  Still eco-friendly?  No, it's an illusion.  Keep your truck if you can still afford the gas and take care of it.  Life is too short to drive a car that sucks.
