My turtle can't eat!?

Question

I just got a little painted turtle, he's about 4 inches long, and whenever he tries to eat it comes right out.

Hmm....try feeding him some lettuce, if he eats it he just might not like the food your feeding him.

What's his habitat like? He should have a water area, deep enough for him to swim around. And a land area with a basking light over it. If he doesn't have enough water that could be the problem. Aquatic turtles can only eat in the water. So when you feed him he should be swimming and you should put the food in the water. It could be that he's stressed, but you said he tries to eat. This leads me to believe it's the water. He should be able to fully submerge himself and swim around.

You can also make sure his food isn't too big. If it's bigger than his head, it's too big to eat. They sell pellets for baby turtles, he should be eating these daily. In addition you should feed a protein like feeder fish, shrimp, worms, or crickets a few times a week. You can also offer fresh fruits and vegetables. Just stay away from iceberg lettuce, it has no nutritional value and has a very high water content. Hope I could help!

if you just got him, he mite just be getting used to the new surrondings, give him a few days,if hes still not eating then, take him to a vet. but dont worry, when my turtles came, they took some time before eating, just keep offering them food, theyll eat sometime..
