My soft shelled turtle died last night. I was given him about a month ago from a friend who no longer wanted him.

4 days ago I bought him a larger tank and moved him into it. It had all the things he needed, heater filter, water, a turtle dock for basking, light etc and I was checking the water daily. After doing all the water test, nitrate, pH etc i cant find anything wrong but when i went to turn his light off for the night last night he had died. Any ideas what could have happened??

  1. the light may have been too hot or too cold.

my friend moved her turtle and got a new light. the light kind of cooked the turtle!

  2. any black dots on his under side?

    soft shell or damage?

white fuzz growing on his leg and neck?

Weasing or breathing funny, blowing bubbles from his nose?

  3. Soft-shelled turtles are EXTREMELY challenging captives. They are prone to shell abrasions and fungal infections, and they require cooler temperatures than most other aquatic turtles. Most people keep them too warm.

  4. Very difficult species to keep.  Check out this site to see if you can figure out what could have gone wrong:
