  1. No. 1080i means that it has at least 1,080 horizontal lines; yours only has a maximum 768 lines. If you want 1080, you'll need to buy a genuine 1080 set (which will probably be advertised as 1080p rather than 1080i)

Ever feel you've been conned by big company's advertising?

  2. No, there is no way of your LCD TV displaying a higher resolution than what it has been designed to display. LCD screens are capable of correctly displaying only one screen resolution. All other resolutions are scaled to fit the screen.

What resolution is the movie you're displaying? If its MPEG-4 coded at level 3.1 or better, you could be getting 1080p resolution signal and the distortion could be the effect of the scaling. Take the disc to your local TV retailer and ask him to play it on their HD Ready and Full HD sets.

Have you connected your player using HDMI cable? If you're using other means of connecting the player to TV, you're still getting a low-resolution signal.

At 40" your TV screen is more than 20" high, which means you get less than 40 lines/inch - less than 2 lines per milimeter - it is qute normal that you can see them, if you watch from less than 2 meters away.

EDIT: 1080i means only that the TV displays 1080 lines, not that it has 1080 lines (1080p). Your TV would use it's 768 lines to display a partial image and then to display another partial image, quickly changing between the two - interlacing.
