Once everything switches over I know my tv will work because of the sat, but will it be an hd picture or will it stay as it is now?

  1. it will stay as it is now. Both your Tv and its source must be HD ready and be using the right ports for it to be in high definition.

  2. It will stay the way it is now.

Dish & Direct TV satellite signals have always been digital. There is a converter built into their satellite receiver that changes the signal to analog so your TV can receive it.

If you  have a standard def satellite receiver, it will never see a HD quality picture even if you  had a HDTV.

Check to see if you get your local channels through an antenna rather than from the satellite. If you  do you will need a converter box or sat receiver with an ATSC over the air digital tuner to keep watching them.

The big change on 2/17/09 is just the shutdown of most of the old analog TV transmitters. It has nothing to do with cable or satellite TV signals. There are already digital over the air broadcasts in most areas.

If you connect a non-digital TV to a HDTV signal, the tuner or converter changes the signal to the old analog type. The extra picture detail in the HD signal is just thrown away. This is true of satellite, cable, and over the air TV reception.

Not all digital TV is in HD, but if you are converting the signal to the old analog standard it doesn't matter, because the extra picture information is just thrown away anyway because your old TV can't receive or display the extra picture detail.
