My tv will display 1080i in component but wont while in hdmi..whats going on?

when im playing games on my xbox 360 or ps3 it always shows 1080i it even says when i check to see what resolution im in on the systems and the tv. but i just got a motorola hd-dvr cable box and hooked it up to my hdmi thinking the 1080i will show and sound better but instead when i go to a hd channel it get a hissing sound for a second and then the channel shows up but it goes to 720p. the cable will show 720p and the tv will show 720p but when i change it back to my componenet channel for my 360/ps3 its in 1080i. so im confused.

720p is better for you're gaming...the system knows what its doing.

Your cable set-top box is set to 720p. Go to the set-top settings and set it to 1080i.
