  1. Assuming that nobody had 5 cards of the same suite (flush), the person with the 10, 2 won with a hand of J,J,9,9,10 .

You can only play with 5 cards and the best 4 cards were the community cards so the the 5th card determines the winner and Mr./Ms. Ten-Two's 10 card is higher than either of the other guys 5s.

    Ten-Two had the higher 'kicker'

BTW, Ten-Two was also the only one who could have had a Flush so he would win either way.

  2. A had J-J-9-9-10

    B had J-J-9-9-5

A wins, B's pair of 5's is counterfitted.

  3. Yeah, what everyone else said.

  4. You always take the best five cards.

In this case player 1 had:

    J J 9 9 T

    Player 2 had:

    J J 9 9 8

So player one had the best hand.

The fact that he had a pair of fives is irrelevant, because there is no such thing as 'three pair' and his fives don't beat the community cards.  Clearly the jacks and nines are better than his fives.  In fact the fifth card, the eight is better than either of his fives.  Which is why the fives don't play.

The ten on the other hand is better than the eight, so would provide a better fifth card, and ultimately the winning hand.

  5. The top 5 hand combo wins in Hold 'em.  In this case, it's J, J, 9,  9, 10.  Depending on the suits, the 10, 2 wins.

  6. I have had very similar arguments with some beginners during some home games on a few occasions.  I try to be as calm and polite about it as possible.  The best success I had went as follows:

I'll use your cards as my example

Ask player 1 to take the 7 cards (his 2 hole, 5 community) he has available to him and make the best 5 card hand that he can.  Unless he is a real novice at poker, he should come up with the JJ998 and realize his 5s don't play.  Now you can show him that player 2's best 5 card hand is JJ88Ten.

Sometimes a novice to Hold Em needs to visually see why those 5s are not in play, this way worked well for me when it came up.

  7. the one who had 10,2 won

  8. The10/2 won, of course by now you know that answer, the best hand for the 5/5 is what is known as "playing the board" (j/j/9/9/8) where as the 10 plays so he had j/j/10/9/9 and wins.

  9. The pocket 5s were "counterfeited" by the two pair on the board, so the 10 out kicks the 8 (neither 5 plays). So the 10,2 wins.

You don't get credit for 3 pair!

(btw 10,2 is known as "Doyle Brunson" as he won the WSOP main event twice with that hand!)

  10. the 10,2 won

pick your best 5 cars from each hand, the 10,2's best 5 were j,j,9,9,w/10 kicker, the 5,5's best hand was j,j,9,9,w/8 kicker, he pair of fives did not matter in this hand

  11. The 2 5's got what we call ''getting counterfeited''. You have to play your best 5 card hand, now that can be all 5 board cards, or 4 board cards and 1 from your hand. In this case the other guys 5's don't play, he is playing the board J-J-9-9-8. And the guy with 10-2 is playing 4 board cards and the ten from his hand as his kicker J-J-9-9-10. SO THE 10-2 WINS HERE.

  12. You go with the one who has the higher kicker card. In this case the guy with the ten. Both of the players would use the two pair in the community cards, but each person uses their best five cards. So the guy with the ten-two would win the hand.

  13. The guy with the ten would have outkicked the guy with the pocket fives even though the guy with the pocket fives technically had another pair.  The two pairs that came out on the flop and the turn were higher so his hand became worthless.

Now, if the river had been an Ace, King, or Queen, they would have split the pot because those cards are all higher than what either play had in his hand.  If a Jack or nine would have come out, they would have split because there would have been a full house on the table.

I always "hate" when it comes down to the kickers because I almost always lose in that case!!  But you know, that's poker and it's part of the thrill of seeing who's going to win the hand in the end!

  14. The 10 2 won because this argument is simple.  Make the best 5 card hand and in this case the 10 2 has a hand of J J 9 9, 10 and the 5,5 plays the board.  You can't have 3 pair in Texas hold em.

  15. the kid who had the ten.  the ten plays as a high card.  the kid with the pair of fives, his fives cancel because there were two higher pairs on the board.  so the person with 10, 2 won with the hand       j,j,9,9,10
