I have had both labrador retrievers since they were pups.. now they are 1year old. They have always been extremely playful towards each other and have for the most part got along, but suddently one of my labs has become extremely aggresive towards the other.... they dont play and can not bare to be near eachother....without growling at eachother or fighting....recently it has begun to growl at my bf and me this has been happening for a couple of weeks now.... I am not sure what to do.. I love both of my dogs and would hate to get rid of one of them...

  1. dogs can sense weak leadership and they are trying to work out between the two of them who will be the alpha dog. the position is open it looks like.

  2. If they're not neutered, get them neutered.

  3. You are not being true leaders to your dog.  Your dog(s) are showing you who is really the alpha dog in this pack.

    This should help.

    And this, too, should help.

    I hope this helps!!

ADD:  High levels of hormones can also do this to them.  Get them to a Vet, they can tell you why they are doing what they are doing.  If they are not neuter, strongly consider getting them fixed so the high levels of hormones diminish.

  4. get them fixed. if its not that their probably just challenging dominance so help to settle their dispute the one that comes in the door first and normally eats first etc is the dominant one so let the other dog know. you might consider taking them through a training course just for the socialization aspect and ask your trainer about it they could off advice.

  5. Survival of the fittest... they are trying to see which one is dominant.

  6. Wait you said the dog is growling at you and your boyfriend? I would have the dog evaluated by a vet to make sure it's not a health problem that is causing the aggression then i would consult a professional trainer right away if it's not a health problem. As for the dogs fighting are they both neutered? if not i would get them neutered ASAP.

  7. I'm going to guess that these dogs are not neutered.  If that's the case, that most likely the root of the problem.

I suggest neutering them both and calling a professional trainer.
