My uncle is a unmarried and childless man who died recently. I wonder if I'm entitled to something he may have left. All he had was a bank account with a amount close to 200.000.00 dollars. He has brothers and sisters, as well as nieces and nephews.

  1. That depends on his will

  2. That was up to him.

If no will, his brothers and sisters will get it.

  3. You are not entitled to anything.

The executor of his estate or his will will determine where his belongings and valuables will go.  If he had no executor named or a will, the probate judge will name one.

  4. No, you are not 'entitled' to anything.  If he was gracious enough to leave you something in his will, that's what you'll get.  If he left no will, the immediate family probably divides what's left of property and assets.  But you are not "entitled"  (or deserving) of anything based on blood relation.

  5. If there is a will that will decide, if not it's up to state law.

  6. Every state has specific laws on the topic.

A bank account MIGHT have a beneficiary named.. in which case, it goes to that person.

He could have left a will, naming whoever he chooses.

If no will exists, then each state has particular "next of kin".  NORMALLY, that would be   spouse, children, parents, siblings, and from there. If you are nephew, you don't indicate if your parent is living or not. It is POSSIBLE that if the estate goes to his siblings, MAYBE children of siblings are entitled to the share of (your) parent.

The breakdown is only going to happen, if there was no other provision such as a will or named beneficiary.  I would usually think that you are not.. but I have documents about one of hubby's great aunts, where they had to find all living family members and there was a division.

You can check by google  "intestate law" and put the name of your state there.

without knowing the state.. no one can say exactly what is correct.
