My uncle was assaulted with a brain injury 8 months ago currently on SDI can he apply for SSDI & SSI now?

I understand SDI lasts for a year and it's been 8 months do I need to tell him to apply now for SSI and SSDI before the SDI ends? My uncle is pretty bad it seemed he was getting better but he's getting worse the brain injury is causing vision and balance problems. Please help :(

  1. SSI/SSDI and SDI aside, he needs to get back to the neurologist, ASAP.

    He would likely benefit from more physical therapy, as he's had a decline in function.


  2. Yes, his SDI will end, it is not meant to be long term. It is also based on the employees earnings.

I've never heard of SDI.  If you mean short term disability, it usually lasts two years.  There's a two year wait for SSDI, but he sure can apply for anything he wants.  But if he's not of retirement age, he won't get SSI.  I think you're asking for the SSDI.  If he's eligible, it IS a two year wait after you're totally disabled.  You have to be unable to work, ANY OCCUPATION.  

    And, you have to have paid in.
