  1. Are you sure that it happened spontaneously and wasn't the result of a botched hotwiring attempt? I had a Honda Civic that also caught fire but it was because someone had tried to hotwire it without knowing what they were doing.

Is there any evidence of a break in (broken window, scratches on lock or door seal)? Or has the fire removed all evidence?

You might want to take a careful look. It may make the difference between getting an insurance payout and not (though it will depend on the fine print in your particular policy).

As for how it can happen spontaneously, it can, and does, happen. A simple short in any of the electrics (either by a faulty electronic component or a piece of worn insulation on a wire) could cause a large current to flow which would heat up wires and set the insulation under the dashboard alight. Pretty rare though.

    Hope this helps.

  2. An electrical short can start a fire , as heat is generated in a wire just like an electric fire in your house can generate heat.

Your car did not just spontaneously combust with no scientific reason to explain why.

You will have to read the small print on your insurance policy to see if you are covered. ( all you insured fully comprehensively)
