My washing machine wil fill with water and agitate, but it won't complete rinse or spin cycles. Help!?

I don't hear the timer running after the agitate(wash) cycle stops. It is a Whirlpool Design 2000, top-loading model.

when it stops see if you can advance the timer by hand and get it to work if that works you need a timer,also if you have different cycles see if it works in another mode one you don't usually use,finally it could be a safety switch,the one that detects the door is open,use a pencil or stick and see if you can click that switch by hand and it starts.............tom
