  1. Check the small turn k**b on the top of the gas control valve, the one you push down to light the pilot.  It must be turned to the on position after lighting the pilot to allow the thermostat to light the burner when the temp calls for heat.   I've seen that set in the pilot position before, when I've gone on service calls.   Also, make sure the temp setting is higher than "vacation."


  2. does the tank come on when you manually turn up  the thermostat  ? if so  you most likely have a temp probe that is faulty ,if you have hard water you also might find the probe well has been covered in mineral build up and getting a false temp reading  

  3. Make sure your hot water out, is turned on (usually located at the top of the heater). You can also touch the pipe and feel if it is hot. If this isn't it, then check your temp setting (it could be low temp). Your last thing is it cold be improperly piped.

  4. replace the thermostat  

  5. Gas or electric ?
