hey guys,

this hopefully my last question, i finally got my wiring done, and the engine starts, but as soon as i turn the choke down the engine shuts off,. And while its runnig there is now water coming out of the little hole.

does running on the choke some how effect the cooling system, and is it just another wiring problem, that the engine wont run with out the choke leaver being used.

thanx again guys

  1. The cards need cleaning> As that's what makes the engine idle>

  2. In all likelihood it is the impeller, it may also be just a blockage that is preventing water from passing through the little indicator hole and the motor is still pumping water.

Check the impeller as that is probably it but sometimes it can be just a blockage at the indicator hole or a blockage at the water intake.

Did the motor run hot, if it is pumping no water it will get hot quickly.

  3. check to be sure there are no insects nesting in the telltale hose.

A running engine should shut off when choked.  If it doesn't, it means you need to rebuild your carbs.

Remove carb(s), disassemble, soak overnight in carb cleaner, blow out all passages with compressed air (or aerosol carb cleaner), reassemble with new carb kit(s), reinstall, link & sync, adjust mixture s***w(s) (if equipped).

  4. The cooling and the fuel systems are separate. Problems with one will not effect the other, except the motor must be running for the cooling system to work.

There are only three possible things to go wrong with the cooling system. The impeller located in the shaft is worn or bad. If you started the engine dry, this is very likely as it takes only a couple of seconds for a dry impeller to wear down.

The next possibility is the drive shaft that turns the prop and water impeller is broken. If you can get the prop to turn while turning the engine over, the drive shaft is o.k.

The third possibility is the water jackets are plugged with corrosion or other foreign objects, like gasket sealer, wrong gasket, etc.

If you are working on an older Johnson / Evenrude, the water return will be below the surface of the tank or lake, and you won't be able to see it.
