  1. Peek became a top contributor by answering lots of questions from snotty little kids who don't appreciate the effort that it takes. What I see in her answer does answer your question. I think you owe her an apology.

BTW, "yellowcheek" may be a local name; it is not the accepted common name for any turtle I ever heard of (and that's most of them).

If you can apologize properly, let me know and I can suggest a few things that might help until you can get your turtle to a competent vet.

  2. Is the water too cold for him? Make sure it's in the right temperature. Sounds like a respiratory problem. You might have to take him to the vet.

  3. Clean and disinfect the tank (you can put the turtle in a box under a light while you do this, but monitor the temperature closely and do not overheat it.  Use a GOOD digital thermometer).  Clean water is a must.  Raise the water temperature by several degrees to 80-82 degrees F. to stimulate the natural immune system.  MONITOR closely and do not overheat the turtle.  If its condition worsens, or the condition is not gone in 10 days, take the turtle to a reptile vet.

If the problem is advanced (lethargic, blowing clear or discolored bubbles/mucus, or the breathing is labored) I would recommend that you get the turtle immediate vet attention and a regimen of antibiotics.

If you don’t already know of a qualified exotics/reptile vet in your area, google: “Herpetological Society” -or-

Good luck, and I hope he's better soon.

*ADD Your adds weren't here when I responded, but the labored breathing sounds very much like a respiratory issue.  That would be treated as mentioned above, depending on how labored the breathing is.  If his breathing is very labored, it could be due to fluid in his lungs, and he can't enough air.  This could be respiratory, or even pneumonia.  If you feel it's severe - take him to a vet.  I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

  4. I STILL wish your turtle luck.

Thanks Oikos..these kids don't realize our age and experience of people over 50 and show no respect.

When we show our respect for other living things, they respond with respect for us.

It takes yrs of growing up to become an adult. These kids don't realize when someone is asking a 'simple' question they generally don't know how to take care of them.

I will be honest I NEVER read up on these guys when I bought them 36 yrs ago like your 40 yr old slider they are stillhere and we must be doing something right. I have learned so much and just would like other peoples sliders live as long as ours.

We do this for the pets to live long healthy lives.

  5. it sounds like respirorty incfection.  take it to the vets

  6. this site has good info and mentioned something about that somewhere.   www.redearslider.com
