My web has 1 page and has been going for over a year and I have now, I think, put in metatags. Still can't find it doing a search though. Why?

  1. First off check and see if the web page has been indexed. Type in the full url in yahoo search (i.e. http://www.yourdomain.com/index.hmtl). If it doesn't find it this means the page hasn't been indexed yet. If it does have a result and it is your page that means it has been indexed. If it isn't indexed, each search engine has a submission page where you can submit your site. If it is indexed and you can't find it on a search that means it is probably ranked really low and is on page 200 or something. Start reading up on Search Engine Optimization, there is tons of info out there. I do this is a part of my job it is actually quite fun. A great tool if you want to spend some money is WebPosition 4, this software will help you optimize your site, and you just need a basic knowledge of html to optimize your site. From there it is just trial and error as none of the major search engines ever release the algorithms that actually rank the web pages. Also you could always hire a company that does SEO to do it for you, but be careful there are a ton of shady ones out there. Google has a great page about what to look for in a good SEO company.

  2. (1) meta tags should correspond to page contents, e.g. if description tag states "culinary skills of a master" the same should appear on page in "type" not mere graphic which are not indexed/spidered the same way.  If keyword meta tag lists for example "cook,cooking,food,preparation" the same words should appear in "type" on same page containing those meta tags.

    (2) else, don't use meta tags, and instead permit search indexing/spidering to simply index site according to contents solely.

    (3) else if determined to use meta tags, be sure to list site with a free site listing for additional promotion if you like (do mere internet search for "free search engine submission").  Other things that can help, list site with "local listings" e.g. Yahoo! Local and similar sites, even join a banner exchange if you like.  If you use frames, be sure to include "noindex, nofollow" on each page of frameset aside from actual index page (index frameset, page that contains the others) as you would not want individual frames indexed.

    For Framesets:

    (for individual frame pages)

    <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">

    <meta name="revisit-after" content="never">

    (for mainframe "index page")

    <meta name="robots" content="index, follow">

    <meta name="revisit-after" content="1 Week">
