Question:

My wedding dress is too small?

by  |  earlier

To make a long story short, i was married in 2006 and at the end of this month i need to wear my wedding dress again. My dress is a size 2 and i have grown (especially in my bust area). I tried the dress on last night and it fits over my butt and lower back just fine but won't zip around my bust. I've got about 2 or 3 inches before it will zip.

Any Suggestions? Is it safe to take to a seamstress? Would they be able to let that much fabric out?

My options probably would be to sell my dress and get a new one, or let the fabric out on the current dress i have. Any suggestions would be very helpful!

  1. it's very difficult to let a dress out because they don't always have the extra fabric to take from somewhere but you should try going to a seamstress. don't sell your dress, that's still the one you wore at your wedding and it's a great keepsake! maybe just see if you can buy a used dress or a cheaper white dress for whatever you need to wear it for.

  2. Take the dress to a seamstress if you're going to wear it only for one occasion and then not wear it for a long time.

That will take care of your problem.

What is there to lose ?

You will be advised to buy a new one anyway if it cannot be done.

I don't think you should sell it right away.

It has a sentimental value to it :)

  3. Take it to a seamstress. I doubt they can let it out that much but they may be able to put small panels in the sides.

  4. A bulging, too small, skin tight dress is NOT appropriate attire for a "temple".

Find a dress that fits; obviously you are not a size 2 anymore and seamtresses cannot work miracles.

    Good luck

  5. See a seamstress and get an opinion on whats best.  they would know if it can be let out

Also you can ask about maybe changing the zipper out for a lace up back, add the laces and loops and a piece od fabric behind to cover the opening (if it fits the design)

  6. I would keep the dress the same way it is but do something with your bust. I always tell my mom this because she looks really bad in babydoll shirts, especially because she had pretty big b***s. Try wearing a tighter bra that will pull your b***s up and squish them in. Trust me....it will work. GOOD LUCK!!!

  7. Your wedding dress is not too small for a slimmer person...your just fatter....put down the fork.

  8. i think a seamstress will do the job no problem at all, the one I have lined up does pregnant ladies so i think you will be safe if u have only gone up a size :)

    Enjoy your day!

  9. Depending on how much the dress was altered originally and if there is any fabric in the seam allowances to let out, then it shouldn't be a problem.  It also depends, of course, on the design of the dress.  If there is beading or a design on the areas that need to be let out, you won't be able to.  Your best bet would be to take it to a seamstress and see what they can do about it.  They may just be able to extend it around where the zipper is, but again, depending on how the dress is made, that may not be an option.

  10. you can take it too a seamstress and it should be fine... i wouldnt sell it.

  11. yes, take the dress to a seamstress but do it as soon as possible because wedding gown alterations can take weeks.

  12. Zip it as far as if will go and lace up the rest. Laced backs are very popular these days in wedding gowns anyways.

  13. Diet

  14. Take it to a seamstress and see about having it redone with a corset back and a modesty panel instead of a zipper.  It's a fairly easy change and shouldn't cost a whole lot.  It would also modernize it a tiny bit, as many of the popular gowns today (especially those from Maggie Sottero) have corset backs.

  15. Isn't it wrong to wear the same dress? That doesn't make sense.

What the h**l, don't wear one and get married naked!!!!

  16. Tut tut tut!

You should of listened.....A moment on the lips is a lifetime on the HIPS!!!

You should be able to get it altered though hun....good luck :-)

  17. make it longer

  18. Go to a very good alteration place, and see what they say, if you trust them and its not too expense, then have it done, if not try to sell your dress on Ebay and get a new one.

  19. They may be able to add some fabric to it and still make it look like it did originally or maybe you could buy a corsette or body shaper to try to hold some in.

  20. If the only issue is a couple of inches in the bust area, a good seamstress should be able to accomidate you with no problem.

Good luck and enjoy your event.

  21. If your dress is a zip up (as stated in your initial question) then have it altered to a lace-up to give yourself some room.  the seamstress will add a modesty panel to it.

If your dress is a lace-up (as stated in your additional details) then a seamstress will enlarge the modesty panel (probably just replace it) and you'll be good to go.

  22. take it to a seamstress they should be able to help you :D don't stress life is too short be happy! -p.s. at least you have b***s i wish i did ;) lol.

  23. Go to a seamstress and get them to do an open back concept with criss cross across the back like a boustia (the bust things) also another option is get material and have them sew it to the back top of the dress so it looks like an extension flowing from the top to the bottom length of the dress so you wont see underneath it that it's open.

    Hope this helps, good luck

I would say no way give up your dress, if it means that much too you.

  24. Why do you need to wear it again?  That part is what is throwing me--generally these dresses are a once-in-a-lifetime deal.

If they can't let it out, wear something else, but by all means do not sell this dress and buy another wedding dress.  That's crazy!

Nobody fits into their dress after a few years--it's not that big a deal.  Just have it heirloomed and put it in the attic like everyone else.

  25. Have you considered getting a matching shrug to wear?  As several others have mentioned, you could run into trouble trying to have it altered - not enough fabric, no matching fabric, etc.  I'm sure a good seamstress could do something with it, but if you wear a little shrug or jacket with it, you don't have to worry about the back or anything.

Just a silk wrap or something might even work.

    Good luck and Congratulations!
