  1. Yes, you might want to consider wearing a lighter color, such as grey or off black, but even if you don't, as long as the rest of your party is dressed in formal wear he can wear a tux.

  2. My husband and I had a morning wedding.  He it wasn't appropriate to have tails, but he had a morning coat, or mourning coat, which is similar to tails, but not as formal and that was perfect.  It just means that his jacket was longer in the back but looked like a regular jacket in the front and he looked just as handsome as someone in tails.  Waiste coats and tails are appropriate for night weddings.  But my husband had the bow tie and vest and the whole nine yards.  He was so handsome that day.  He still is.

  3. At a morning wedding, there are three appropriate forms of attire. We'll go from least formal to most formal.

"Informal" refers to a suit and tie, and all that goes with it. This is the simplest and most practical, and is most advisable if the bride's dress is rather modern and simple.

"Semi-formal" would be a grey or black "stroller" jacket (like a suit jacket, but preferably one-button and peaked lapel) with grey striped trousers, a grey or buff vest (waistcoat), a silver patterned tie, and a turn-down collar shirt. (Black dress shoes, of course.) This is a good mix of formality and practicality, but can be difficult to find. Advisable with a traditional bride's dress.

"Formal" is similar to semi-formal, but with a morning coat (a.k.a. "cutaway coat") instead of the stroller jacket. The turn-down collar and necktie could be replaced with a wing collar and ascot tie. This is the most formal, but quite difficult to do well--morning coats don't fit like suit jackets, and rented ones never look right.

The tuxedo is evening semi-formal, and should not be worn before sundown or 6:00 P.M., whichever comes first. Likewise, a tailcoat is evening formal. (Thus, a morning coat and a tailcoat are equally formal--they are simply for different times of day.)

My advice: Buy, don't rent. (The groom has to be able to measure up to a bride in a fabulously expensive dress.) This site offers everything you need for only about $250:

If you buy the black stroller jacket, the wool trousers and vest, and one of those ties (I like the second one), pair it with the white collared shirt and black shoes that every man has, and have a tailor do a minimum of work on the jacket, I can bet that your groom will be better dressed than 99% of the grooms out there. Mazel tov!
