Reece is 5 months today (cant believe it!) but he has a cold. hes sneezing and coughing. is there anything i can give him?

we have calpol, but I'm not sure whether or not to give him any.

my doctors are ridiculous. you have to ring before half 9 to get to speak to them, and between getting him sorted and stuff, it was after half 9!

so any advice will be greatly appreciated!

  1. calpol is fine read the instructions but a 2.5ml spoon is fine 4 him every 4 or so hours it will make him feel better docs cnt realli do anything 4 a cold but also go 2 tesco asda etc n in the baby section they do little drops if hes a little snuffly it wrks wonders i hope this helped x

  2. If you have a safe little chair, put him to sleep in that. It'll be more comfy, keeping him a bit upright. Give him medicine if he gets a temperature, otherwise, lots of cuddles and don't worry too much. There is no easy way to develop an immune system.

  3. My little boy is just over 5 months and caught his first cold last week.  We bought the 2+ months Calpol (not as strong as the regular stuff so double check) and we just gave him the 2.5ml dose every 4 hrs.  He is really stuffed up and having trouble sleeping so we also got Karvol for babies.  I put it on a muslin next to his cot (out of reach cos they must not touch it) and that seemed to help, as well as getting cot blocks to put under the cot feet so he can breathe more easily.  I was told if they lit flat on their backs without being elevated, they can develop an ear infection.

Is there a pharmacy near you?  If so, just go up with Reece and ask them for advice on what to give them.  Some pharmacies in the UK let you register with them and give you medicine for free since your little boy is just a baby.  I've heard of this but never actually bothered to register myself!!!

Anyway, pharmacists are really helpful these days and they can offer you loads of advice that sometimes your GP is too busy to bother with.

Its up to you if you wanna take this advice - I always worry about giving medical type advice on here but our pharmacist really helped AND they can give you the bigger bottle of Calpol (or whatever they recommend).  The ones you buy in the supermarket are so small and expensive!!!

Good luck - I hope he is better soon.  It is such a shame for the wee soul!!!

  4. Try medised, which is for babies over 3 months, used for colds. It contains paracetamol and other medicines which help clear their noses and help them to sleep. Its worked brilliant with my 2 boys and helps them sleep when they are all snuffly.

Check with the pharmasist when buying it so they can tell you if your little boy will be ok taking it, but im sure he'll be fine with it.

Dont worry youre not alone with the doctor - mine are exactly the same - if youre not 80 and over you havent got a chance of an appointment!! lol

  5. Hi I feel for you as my 10 week old has a bad cold at the mo, courtesy of her big sis. Luckily for you your lil man is old enough to take certain things like any medicine for a tickly cough, also snuffle rub which is the equivalent to vix for babies. If his cough isn't tickly you can sit with him in a steamy bathroom (so run a hot bath or put shower on for a while) Also if there is a radiator in his bedroom which is on at night, put a damp towel over it, it works like a humidifier and helps moisten the air. If you're still worried try nhs direct on 08454647, hope this helps!

    oh don't forget...plenty of fluids!!

  6. what are his symptoms?

email me and i can help you out. poet2mc@aol.com

  7. u can  use pediatric syrups like ALERCET, TUSQ.... MY sister uses alercet for her kids...

  8. I tend to hold off with the Calpol until night time or when they have a fever. I know you didn't get in toutch with the doctors but if you can they will prescribe some drops to help clear the babys nose. You can also get vapour rubs suitbale for younger babies and you could try rubbing some one yourself and giving him a big cuddle.

And yes he will be able to breathe through his mouth fine.
