Question:

My weeping willow tree looks like a bush?

It's about a year and a half old and is not more than 6 feet tall I guess and it's bushing out more than it is going up. I am afraid to prune because I pruned a pine tree and now it's dead. The terrain is a little rocky, not real wet but not real dry. I don't use fertilizers or anything because this type of tree is supposed to be aggressive and tough, right?

  1. Willows prefer wet ground in general.  Also, give it more time.  A year and a half is not much in the life of a tree...Call a garden store and ask about how long it will take to reach say, 20 feet tall.

  2. just trim the bottom about a foot, just so they are not touching the ground. you DO need to prune, maybe you can get someone to help you?

  3. Many weeping willows don’t ever get pruned but others are pruned because they get in people’s way either when mowing or they want more sunshine in an area. It is up to you to decide how much and when. Willows are pretty hardy trees and you really can’t hurt them much.

We have one that started growing from some woodchips we had brought in from a tree trimming company. We decided to let it grow and have trimmed it profusely because we are trying to shape it into an unusual shape for the fun of it. Since it is there as a flook it seemed like a good chance to bend a tree trunk into a semi-S shape. But the branches grow too fast so we cut it back twice a year, and sometimes very heavy. It doesn’t seem to be bothered by it and keeps growing by leaps and bounds.

  4. i would suggest that you would rather plant a new weeping willow
