Question:

My wife's permanent residency application is taking so long. Anything I can do to speed it up?

My wife is immigrating from S. Korea to Canada and applied for permanent residency in June 07. It's June 08 now and despite the website saying it would take 4-5 months, nothing's happened. We've called many times, but it they just keep saying there's nothing wrong with our paper work, just that it's in process. Here's some more detail.

-Applying from within Canada

-In Dec 07, the website stated "a decision has been made, you will be contacted soon", but all we got was a sheet asking for more background info - which we've provided

-Medical results have been received.

-Was able to get a worker's permit

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

  1. Hello Jeff

Unfortunately you have to wait. There is no way for you to speed the process. Many people have pending cases that still have not been solved, at least she has her work permit. Normally it takes about one year for the process to be fulfilled. All I can say is to be patient, the process will end soon.

    Good Luck!

  2. You are applying from INSIDE canada and already you are complaining?

Inside applications ALWAYS take longer - on average between 1 and 2 years. You have no choice but to wait. And no you cannot speed it up.

Please be patient. There are thousands of others ahead of you who need to be processed first.

One more note - that 4-5 months time you mentioned - you did NOT read it properly!!

    Permanent Residence Applications

Processing times are for “First Stage Approval”

That is for FIRST stage only - to AIP.

You have already passed AIP - your wife got her health card and work permit. NOW you have to wait. As we have all mentioned.

  3. I understand how frustrating it must be for you. However, please, under no circumstances should you try to "speed it up". Telephoning and writing to immigration officials will result in a delay in processing of your wife's file.

Immigration officials have hundreds of thousands of applications to work through and, like it or not, they take time...and lots of it!

A friend of ours tried to speed up his wife's application and the result was that it took longer than it should have. Immigration officials who must spend time answering questions about their family member's application are not spending time processing that application.

So, please, as hard as it is, I advise you to remain patient.
