What size boat do you recommend? We will be sailing it ourselves and has anybody done this and what were the highs and lows of this. We live in Spain., but are not loaded just downsizing house and want to do this before it's too late in our lives.

  1. i would say the biggest you can afford because you are goin to need food supplies beds cloths water that wont be a promblem 4 water

  2. If you are going to live aboard, you need at least 55ft, if you need any info get in touch Ive sail all over the Med, so can give you a few pointers.

  3. if you dont have any experience living on or sailing a boat; start with a charter with a captain and see if you really can do this and how big a boat you feel comfortable handling...it's NOTHING like driving and RV ( caravan to you Brits)

having lived aboard boats in the Caribbean 35 years and known hundreds of people who do/did the same, the answer is somewhere around 35-45 foot as a comfortable compromise between big enough to live on. big enough to handle winter Med gales, and small enough for two people to handle. both physically and financially

  4. sorry I don't know enough to recommend a boat but I wanted to applaud your attitude. Live life to the full and good luck!

  5. If you have not done this before I suggest try a month or so charter. You really don't know what is comfortable what you will like/dislike until you do it. You may find that a 40 footer is way too much boat or way too little, who knows. Though living on a sailboat cruising the Med sounds quite the dream, it is not for everybody. A friend of mine retired in his fifties, bought a 42ft sloop and took off to the Bahamas with his wife. They returned a year later, sold the boat and never sailed since. Anyways, I envy you, good luck and happy sailing.

  6. if you can rent a sail boat for the 1st round --  you should do just that to be sure that the accommodations and  size are what you want ---- I recently bumped into a couple in Puerto Vallarta and they are doing your ''dream'' and love it -- they were leaving PV and were on their way to Australia ... had a  55 or 58 footer and were doing some refit and room changes .. good luck

  7. Make sure it has a motor,,sounds fun, me & my wife probably would kill each other,,,,not really,,,

  8. Grab some basic sailing courses while you shop around and start learning the ropes, as it were. There really is a lot to know but it isn't so difficult.

  9. If you are talking yacht, 25ft should do the trick.

    Good luck to you.

  10. I live aboard a 38 ft sailboat with wife and 2 cats. We are quite comfortable and can handle the boat just fine without a crew. Our boat is an older IOR design with less room than the modern designs. Something in the 35' to 45' range would be easy on you and your budget. Look for a European-built boat (service issues) . You might consider a boat that is being sold out of a charter fleet. They are often well equipped for living aboard. Be sure to get a good survey before you buy.

Living aboard is liberating - you find out what you really need to live comfortably. You can't have it all so you have what you need and if you can adapt to life aboard you can be quite comfortable and happy. It is a lifestyle change that some people can't adapt to. Be open to the change and learn to live slowly and in harmony with the water and weather.

    Fair Winds !!!----
