Heck no.  Canoeing and kayaking is a lot of fun and pretty good exercise for the upper body too.  I am 52, my wife is 55, and we have a 14 year old sun and we go every year.  We live in South Mississippi and don't have any really wild rivers but we always have a lot of fun.   When we use a canoe we pack a medium sized ice chest with water, sodas, fruit, and other snacks.  In kayaks, we use smaller, more personal sized ice chests.  Take bungee cords to secure the ice chests.  A disposable water proof camera is nice too.  Hope you have a good time.
