Question:

My wife just started working in a daycare with infants. She has been sick for a week. Any preventitive advice?

She is afraid she may lose her job. She had only missed two days in two years at her previous job.

  1. Frequent hand-washing is the best protection but most people who start in a new situation with groups of kids get sick a lot until their immune systems bulk up. Get lots of rest, lots of Vitamin C and eat well are are all good advice.

I work in a daycare and what I have found works well(at least for me) is to take Airborne at the first sign of a cold or flu symptoms---don't put off taking it--do it right away.  I read that it was created by a teacher who sick and tired of being sick and tired--catching the flu and colds from the kids.  I hope that it will help her.

  3. Most viruses are passed by hands.  She should wash her hands frequently and I suggest the kids do the same.

  4. Preventative Advice for keeping her job- Absolutely get a Dr.'s note.  You can even ask the doctor to note that illness like this for your wife is uncommon.

    For future illness- welcome to the first year of working with kids.  

    Of course, hand wahing.  I think that Airborne really works, and I use the 3 hour Hand Sanitizer by Vicks myself.    There are other Immunity Boosting products (one is a yogurt smoothie).  They don't hurt to try.

    And plenty of rest!

    This has been a very bad year for the flu - the flu shot only worked on 40% of flu strains out there.  It happens.

  5. well she cant sacrifice getting children sick. maybe clariton d.. that helps with me. ummmm.. she cant possibly get BABIES sick.. thats horrible..oh c**p.. sorry dude

  6. No she is going to catch every cold sniiffle that the kids have. I worked in a daycare for 8 1/2 yrs.I know for a fact.

  8. Flu shot and wash hands often!!!!  Also, take vitamin C,  I know that a teacher invented Airborne and I have heard that is real good and works on prevention and if someone is already sick, hope she gets better!

    if she has toddlers, teach them to wash their hands. make up songs about it and give points... take a multi vitamin each day and avoid fast food- eat the real stuff

  10. If your wife has been legitimately ill then a sick note/cert from her doctor should protect against an unfair dismissal. Child care workers have the same labour protections mechanisms as any other workers. Always provide your employer with medical cert. Every provider has their own policy but it must conform to the country's labour law. In the best interest of the child/children going to work with any infection is a serious issue. Cross contamination can have very serious consequences for infants with immature immune systems. If your wife holds no labour entitlement and is made unemployed,it reflects very poorly on the standard of care that the provider offers. Best of luck

  11. make sure to wash hands constantly and use a hand sanitizer plus there is a new over the counter called airborn to help prevent sickness

  12. Wash her hands or use hand sanitizer gel, get flu shot, don't touch face to invite germs in, wear gloves when changing diapers or wiping a runny nose on a child.  It's hard not getting sick when you work with kids.  Good luck.

  13. Just like kids get sick there first year of school, teachers do, too.  Make sure she is eating healthy (lots of fresh veggies) and taking a multi-vitamin daily.  Exercise also help boost your immune system. Unfortunately, she is coming in at the worst part of the cold season.  

    I support the other answers about washing your hands AND applying lotion afterwards.  Cleaning areas frequently.  Enforce the sick kid rules...send them home!!!  No sick kids should be allowed in daycares period.  This includes the parents who drug their kids heavily and send them onto daycare.  Bad news for kids and staff.
