Question:

My wifi worked fine last night but now the only page that loads is Google.com. How to fix it?

When I type in a web address, the Google search for that page opens. For example, if I type in www.ebay.com, the Google page with ebay at the top opens. Google News loads fine but not CNN.com. This just started happening this morning. I tried rebooting my router and modem but that didn't work. My iPhone has the same problem in my apartment so it sounds like a wifi configuration issue. Anyone know how to fix it?

  1. Hmm... try pinging some sites. Go to Start - Run - type "Cmd" - Type "Ping www.yahoo.com" and "Ping www.google.com". Note the differences. Then try doing a trace route. Do the same as above but instead once you get to the command prompt type "tracert www.yahoo.com" and "tracert www.google.com". This will show you every stop your request makes on its way to the web servers. So, it will also show you where the problem is. It sounds to me like possibly your DNS settings have been messed up somehow. Check your IP settings by going to Start - Run - type "Cmd" - Type "ipconfig /all" and make sure that your DNS server is set to the IP of your router (that is unless you have an actual DNS server set up, in which case you want the DNS to point to that server). Anyway, its a start....

    Let me know

  2. Try a known-good, unblocked site like microsoft.com/  If that doesn't work, try http://207.46.197.32  If that works (that's microsoft's IP address), your DNS servers aren't working.  If things are all set correctly, call your provider.  (They maintain their DNS servers.)

If that's still no good, start from scratch.  Factory reset your router.  If still no good, connect to it and set it up the way you had it set up.

If that's still no good, call your provider's tech support.

Your ears are good - it is what it sounds like, but where between the radio signal and the internet the problem lies is the thing you have to determine.  (If tech support is good, just call them and see if they'll talk you through troubleshooting.  Some will, and some are more useless than asking the wall.)

  3. reset the config of your router. seems like you have mistakenly enabled parental control or firewall with high security settings. Also do the same with your browser setting, set it to default.
