  1. It is NOT normal.

Either the air flow across the evaporation coil is restricted due to dirt or the water cannot drain out of the bottom and the water (condensate actually) builds up and freezes.

Make sure the air flow is not blocked, the coils are clean, and the water drain holes are not blocked with dirt.  You must turn it off until the ice has melted.

  2. Here is something you can try. Go to the hardware store and ask for a can of foaming cooling coil cleaner(non rinsing). Spray this on the inside coil and wait 10 minutes. Use the whole can. The lifting action of the foaming coil cleaner will deeply penetrate into the coils and remove the stuff that has the coil clogged up. A blocked air flow will cause the freon to pool up across the bottom of the coil and creep up towards the top. The result will be a slab of ice. The fact that the ice is building up tells me you probably have enough freon in the system. Remove the most of dust and contaminants with a soft brush before you spray on the cleaner for best results. Clean the air filter and clean it often.

  3. We once had a Sears dehumidifier unit. It was noisy so we placed it in an unheated front upstairs room and one winter it froze up because the room dropped below the temperature that was safe for operation.

It's like a refrigeration unit.  We had to take that heavy thing to the Sears repair center and it really didn't last too many years after that incident.

I don't know what they did to fix it.

  4. when mine done that they said it was my thermostat so i changed it (sears did) but it never ran that cold again

  5. you are probably running it to much, especially if it is an older model
