Question:

My window air conditioning unit is icing over???

I've been doing some research about this problem and it seems that maybe my evaporating coils are dirty, this answer seemed the most logical since my unit is less than 2 years old and I don't think it needs recharging just yet, and the air flow is excellent. But I admit i've never cleaned the outside of the air conditioner.

It seems that I need to clean the evaporating coils that are in my window unit, but where are they and what do they look like?? I don't know what to clean!

  1. Run the fan ONLY to clear the ice, clean or change the filter, clean the coil, make sure the blower is running on high speed, and have someone throw gauges on it and check the charge if it continues to do freeze after you have done the other things.Good luck and start checking.

They look like a radiator in a car and are right next to the blower. The fins should be free of dirt, mold and other debris.

You can clean them with a hair comb or brush.Just don't bend the fins.

  2. The evap coils are just under your air filter.soap water and a soft brush after they have been vacumed. If you took the unit out then have it steam cleaned(more trouble but much better)

  3. Cleanliness of the coils is definitely a must but icing over is usually always a sign of low freon.
