I pulled the unit out some and tried cleaning up. The metal fan blades are not catching and seem to move freely. However, after restarting AC, still same screeching problem and not blowing air. Fan turns slow. Unplugged and pulled unit out again, and the housing for the fan motor was extremely hot. I'm thinking this baby has had it.

  1. Looks like the bearings of the fan motor are dry. Usually the bearings (bush) are pre lubricated and will last life time. Try putting few drops of light machine oil to the bearings. If this does not work out you will have to replace the fan motor.

If the AC is old , say more than five years and if you see corrosion on the botom then buy a new AC, because when you dismantle to replace the fan motor you will not be able to fix it back.

  2. if the unit is in good condition and was blowing good and cold you can replace the motor but if its an old unit you may opt to buy a more efficiant one

  3. sounds like brushes in fan motor are going out, might be time for a burial

  4. The fan motor needs replaced.
