  1. Try login in to the wifi  upstairs and increase the signal strength. If it is a linksys wrt router you can change the firmware to also boost the sig even better.

OR get a better antenna with a higher Db rating.

  2. Yes there is.  Use powerline instead of wireless: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoBYr3Ezk...

You can also create a hybrid network by buying this product: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

This hybrid network can definitely boost your signal.  The device in the kit without wireless plugs into the wall near your router.  The wireless device plugs into the wall.  See what doesn't make sense here is you can plug the wireless device any where.  You can litteraly have it connected 2 feet away from your computer that is currently on wireless, so you might as well go powerline.

You can keep your wireless network up just in case you want to roam and not have to drag the powerline adapter with you.

Wireless is great for those devices that require roaming.  Wireless is great for ipods.

Even most laptops can just use powerline instead of wifi.  WIFI has its place, but I think it is the most over used technology in the world.

  3. Yes there is a 'Expander' you can purchase that will boost the signal for you from your router. Here is a website of an expander I truely recommend.
