I have a 20" yardman push mower. the thing wont stay running. I am thinking that there is a linkage missing between the throttle cable and the lever that is connected to the governer. if you look at the carb. there is the cable coming fromt he throttle. that is connected to a little arm which doesnt do anything when you move the cable. it just rotates. The lever it is connected to is then connected to another swivel arm. that is connected to the air flow damber inside the carb. then that is connected to the governer. the engine is a briggs. if you disconnect that rod from the governer to the damper valve the valve is free to move. connected it holds the damper wide open. is there supposed to be another spring from the lever that the throttle cable is connected to and the damper? Please help...the grass is getting very tall

  1. Find the model number and code for the B&S engine go to following website www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/m...

Then find the parts manual, hopefully you will find a drawing that shows the linkage. Have had to use this site a few times for linkage hookups.

  2. If you haven't disconnected or altered any of the things you described, I'd suggest you check the air filter. It will eventually become clogged with dirt and should be replaced every couple of years. If you haven't done so, this is likely the problem. If not, take it to a qualified small engine repair shop and let them fix it before you do more harm than good!

  3. maybe the idle is too low.
