  1. That's wonderful that you adopted this boy. Their teeth need cleaned or it will cause them health problems. It does work and then you keep them brushed so it doesn't happen again. Just go to the information page for the link on teeth.

  2. Dogs need putting under for scraping as they tend not to sit still for this procedure so its safer for vets and staff and less stressful for the dog! Scraping works BUT you ought to get some doggy toothpaste and get the vet nurse to show you how to clean his teeth and consider adding more teeth friendly foods in his diet and some dental kongs to play with! Good luck!

  3. The vet will scrape and polish the teeth,as well as attend to any broken or decayed teeth. It is important for dental health also the bacteria from the teeth can cause systemic infections.

  4. How old is your Yorkie?  I would definitely take your baby to the vet and get this problem taken care of because you don't want it to lead to any serious problems down the road. A Vet does an excellent job cleaning teeth and making sure there are no infections.  There are certain cases where they do put dogs under, but that isn't a big deal.  The even have IV's they can hook up to them while they are under to keep their fluids going in case there is an emergency.

After the cleaning it is fairly easy to keep them clean.  My 2 Yorkies LOVE chewing on things.  I suggest Goofballs, or some treat that takes them a while to eat and also cleans their teeth during the process.  Also, if your Yorkie likes Ice, that works really well at cleaning their teeth when they chew.  Just make sure the pieces are the right size for your dog so he/she doesn't choke.  I never brush my dogs teeth, I just let them  do what they naturally want to do, chew.  Just give them the right chew, lots of fresh water, and a trip to the Vet once a year for routine checkup's to make sure they are healthy!  Good Luck!

  5. Yup, when you have a vet professionally clean your dog's teeth, they put them under and get all the stuff off the teeth, not only what you can see, but also below the gumline. After that you can follow up with regular brushing and that should keep your dog's teeth in a lot better shape.

  6. Because of the popularity of yorkies and therefore the numerous "back-yard" breeders and puppy mills, we now have to deal with the fact that yorkies have developed terrible teeth and gum problems.  My rescue yorkie's teeth were so bad, that she has only two left.

And yes, the vet has to anesthetize the dogs to clean their teeth.  And their teeth only get worse with age.  Regular dog food acts as a sort of "paste" that sticks to their teeth.  They need regular abrasion to scrape it off.

You might check out the group on yahoo.com called RAWFEEDING.  Proponents of feeding raw, including raw meaty bones, swear that their dogs have the best teeth and never need dental cleanings.  Plus, they also claim lots of other health benefits.

I have done much research lately and spoken with some vets at the University of Georgia vet school and they concur.  They say while they don't study the effects of raw diets, their patients that are on a raw diet are healthy and their owners swear by the positive affects.  They tell me there is no reason NOT to feed a raw diet.

The raw diet could save your dog's teeth.  Good luck!

  7. Definatly take him to the vet!!! You never know what they could possibly find, that you cant even see! Im going for dental assisting, and i do know that dogs can also get periodontal disease just liek humans!! And yes they do put dogs under while the procedure is happening so it's more comfortable for both the dog and the vet! So yes i'd definatly have it done, and yes definatly continue  taking care of your yorkies teeth, get chewy bones that are approved by the ADA(american dental association.. check the back/front of dental dog treats it'll say ADA approved or something like that) to help breath/teeth... AND also, get your dog used to brushing of the teeth about once a week, and this should take care of the problem!!!

  8. At this point a vet is your best bet then keep them clean by brushing them every other day they also have dental care treats that help
