need the light on when she goes to sleep. It is getting really difficult especially as the light that gets left on is in the hallway between her room and ours and our door doesn't close so our room stays illuminated. She is only about 8 months old and I wasn't aware that they would need this type of comfort at this age.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to avoid ending up with a full blown dependency on "night lights"?

  1. My son has always had a night light. Some say it goes back to the whole animal instinct thing. When a baby startles in their sleep and gets the feeling that they are falling, they like to be able to see their surroundings when they open their eyes because it is comforting. They say the startle response or feeling of falling may be linked to some marsupials or primates that live in trees and whose life depends on them not falling out of the trees as babies because of predators. While I am not sure I totally buy this theory, it does make sense that a baby would feel comforted by seeing their surroundings when they wake up during the night. I don't even like sleeping in total blackness. Sorry I don't have more tips,.....

  2. you could buy one of those crib accesorries that light up and are supposed to soothe the baby...I have a Fisher Price waterfall soother and it emits a very light blue light from the "waterfall" and makes a water sound, my baby just loves his

  3. Hmm, im 26 and still need a little light in the room, pitch dark freaks me out.  So many people need a night light so it really isnt that big of a deal or something you need to break with her, but i do understand it could be hard to sleep with the light for you, so get a little light toy you can put in her crib, or one of those cute little light up dolls.. remember the glow worm lol, they still sell those :)   GL

  5. She may need that type of comfort until she's a teenager!

Just get her a plugin nightlight if you don't want to leave a main light on.

  6. That is a hard one, My daughter i needing a light aswell to fall asleep.

I will be keeping an eye on this question to see what people recomend.

EDIT: CLARE lolololol you got it too!! it took me a while!

  7. Lol, I think that you have decided to use a red flag to a vanilla bull!

On the subject of nightlights - they really only give a very soft glow so i don't think using one for a few months would cause your daughter to be dependent on them.  Give it a go - at least you will get some sleep!

EDIT : Mummy to one - yes I think she is trying to tempt Her Nuttiness out of her hiding place!
