Myke Halkema and Gayle Mahulette clinch Women’s Doubles title at Under 19 Six-Nations 2012
Netherlands’ Myke Halkema and Gayle Mahulette made their presence felt as they clinched Women’s Doubles title at the Under 19 Six-Nations 2012 on Monday, April 9, in Germany.
In the title contest, Halkema and Mahulette surprised the crowd by putting up superb show and overwhelmed the higher ranked Sophie Brown and Holly Smith of England.
Halkema and Mahulette, who were the second seeds in Women’s Doubles category at the championship, showed their impressive craft when they defeated the top seeds Sophie and Holly in an emphatic manner.
The Dutch shuttlers were nervous in the opening game but showed a wonderful confidence in the second and third set and managed to win the fight in three games.
On the other hand, Sophie and Holly failed to live up to expectations as they played under pressure in the final set of title match and eventually lost it in a one-sided way.
In the opening set, the top seeded English shuttlers played flawless badminton and remained in complete control throughout the opening half.
After the break, Halkema and Mahulette tried to break the rhythm of their opponents and lost the opening set with a 17-21 score on the board.
In the second set, Halkema and Mahulette put up a gutsy performance when they played an attacking badminton and did not spare any chance for English shuttlers to dominate the pace. Until the break, the Dutch ladies were ahead on the board.
After the interval, Halkema and Mahulette continued playing in the same positive fashion and won the second set with an impressive margin of 21-16.
In the deciding set, Halkema and Mahulette showed their inspiring skills when they did not commit any mistake and remained in complete control. They were in complete commanding position until the one-minute break.
After the break, Halkema and Mahulette remained positive and aggressive in the court. They did not let the English shuttlers to fight back in the contest and won the final set with a superb margin of 12-13.
Halkema and Mahulette grabbed Women’s Doubles title by bagging the final contest with a 17-21, 21-16 and 21-13 score on the board.
