Mykhaylo Kononenko wins fifth stage of 2011 Tour of Slovakia: Cycling News
Kolss Cycling team’s Mykhaylo Kononenko won the fifth stage of 2011 Tour of Slovakia in Velky Krtis on Wednesday, June 8.
Mykhaylo Kononenko took a total of 4 hours, 9 minutes and 45 seconds to cover a distance of 184.5 kilometres.
After winning the stage, Kononenko told the media, "Today it was very difficult stage, especially so long. In the brain, we work together. I tried to help especially Vasylukovi, which could be a leader. He focuses mainly on the overall classification. It's
important to win especially in terms of team, because it is a prestigious event."
David Dvorsky of the PSK Whirlpool-Author team was runner-up and Andriy Vasylyuk of the Kolss Cycling team finished third.
Joachim Tolles (TT Raiko Argon 18) was in a good form and grabbed the fourth spot with 1 minute and 25 seconds behind Mykhaylo.
In the last 80 kilometres, a group of four-riders made their first break-away, including, Mykhaylo Kononenko, David Dvorsky, Andriy Vasylyuk and Joachim Tolles. All of them worked together and built a lead of four-minutes over the peloton.
Roman Bronis stated, "Leaders like underestimating the Ukrainians and let him escape. Then headed frontrunner stepped hard loss and withdrew. Trio had to go very well when he managed to bounce so,"
The two riders, Andriy and Joachim were unable to maintain their pace and were caught up by the peloton. David Dvorsky attacked and managed to gain the lead, but in the last circuit, Ukrainian crossed the finish line ahead of the other cyclists.
The three riders, Martin Frano, Jiri Nesveda and Raivis Skujins were disqualified in the stage.
Itera-Katusha team’s Nikita Novikov retained his overall lead with the timing of 19 hours, 14 minutes and 59 seconds. Tomislav Danculovic of Loborika Favorit was in second place with 10 seconds behind Novikov.
Kristijan Durasek took the third spot with a difference of 22 seconds. The stage winner Kononenko was in 55th spot with 18 minutes and 50 seconds.
The next stage will start in Sahy and end in Trnava. All the riders will cover a distance of 170.1 kilometres.
