I have a social studies project on mummies and I need to know all about them as I can. Especially about why and how they were made, why the heart was saved and the Ancient Egyptian belief in life after death. Thanks a lot!

  1. Mummies were made to preserve the body for the afterlife.  After a person died, their bodies were washed and cleansed with herbs/balms and with Natron (baking soda) to help decomposing.  They pulled out the organs and were put into canopic jars to help preserve them.  They chanted passages out of the Book of the Dead to help the deceased soul reach heaven and buried personal possesion to keep them comfortable in the afterlife.

  2. okay-

-the heart was saved because it was believed to be used in the afterlife

-the brain was not saved because they believed it was not of use to a dead person

-they used myrrh and other perfumes to reduce the smell
