Mysterious car problem... Check engine like comes on when the air is turned off?

Has anyone ever had this problem? My boyfriend's 97 Saturn has a problem with his car, the check engine light turns on when ever he shuts off his air conditioner for more than a few minutes. He has a friend that is a mechanic, and the friend doesn't know what the problem is either.

Any ideas people?

Is there a significant drop in RPM when the A/C is turned off? I think the problem is the engine is running hot and when you turn on the A/C the fans dedicated to the A/C kick on cooling down the radiator . my guess is he has a bad sensor or fan for the regular cooling system.
