Mystery material lamp/ correct light bulb to prevent fire hazard.?

I'm looking to get one of these DIY T-rex lamps. The website that sells them says they are made from a mystery material ,and it does kinda look like paper but it seems as though it has to be a bit sturdier than that. Also for the 26 dollars I really hope it isn't just paper. For anyone who hasn't seen it here is the link.

As you can see they have several to choose from and under material it says PP. Not sure what the initials stand for. It does look thicker and heavier than paper though.

However, I'm trying to figure out the best wattage usage for a lamp like that. I was thinking of a low 3watt halogen light but since it will be on my computer desk in my room I don't think I want the brightness of the halogen bulb. Does anyone have a suggestion for the best bulb to use? Probably looking for the same amount of light that is in the picture.

Thanks

  1. PP is the abbreviation for Polypropylene. It's pretty tough stuff, but it has a melting point of around only 160°C, so the lamp will need to be pretty low wattage to prevent damage.

Since the website shows the things illuminated from within, doesn't the kit come with light socket and recommended bulb?

  2. opt for the flourescent - it comes in all types of bases including candelabra - and there is no risk of fire or heat.

  3. I'd be very wary. This lamp may not be UL rated. If it isn't and if it catches on fire, you could have problems with your insurance.
