I'm really confused on how cycling works in the Olympics and want to know why both cyclist start at different times and one is chasing the other and moments later they race for the finish line. Is this even fair? 10 points for the answer that helps me understand.

  1. It might help you to know that there are a number of different track cycling events. It sounds like you are describing the sprints. As the name suggests this is about sprinting. But they still have to do a few laps so the sprinting doesn't start until towards the end when there is only 1 lap to go. Basically when they ring the bell. All that matters is who crosses first not the time.  So the idea is to get the jump on the other rider and hold a lead during the sprint at the end.

So when they start doesn't matter. Some sprinters like to come from behind others like to control the race up front. There are advantages to both the front and back. In front you have to watch your opponent which is harder, but you can block them with your position on the track. At the back you can see them, which helps in making a break.

There are also pursuit races where the riders have to start on opposite sides of the track and they try to pass the other rider/s. There are points races, where they get points for crossing the line at the front every 10 laps. The kerin, which is sort of a sprint races but there are 6 riders and they get a lead to build up their speed over a couple of laps. And there is the madison, which is great fun but I bearly know how that works.

BTW sprinting is just about my favourite track cycling event.

  2. It is a tactical race.

They don't actually start racing from the start line.

One leads out but they don't start racing until the last lap or 2.

Some riders like coming from behind, others like to lead.

Getting into the position that suits their style at the right time will help them win.
