Mzolisi Yoyo defends South African light welterweight title against Mzukisi Mgidi – Boxing news
Mzolisi Yoyo, the current South African light welterweight champion, put forth an impressive show of pugilism and defended his newly acquired title by nailing his Saturday night opponent Mzukisi Mgidi, in the fourth-round via technical knockout, during the
12-round bout held on May 12, 2012.
The ring for the bout was set up at Orient Theatre situated in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa whereas the above bout headlined the Saturday night showdown. The night was co-headlined by the non-title 10-round bout between Miniyakhe Sityatha and
Marjohn Yap.
Yoyo, who ranks number four in his home country in the light welterweight rankings, was entering in his career’s 18th bout and boasted a resume of 13 wins with 10 via knockout.
The South African proud was on a two-bout win streak and grabbed his South African light welterweight gold in a bout against Sikhulule Sidzumo. This was Yoyo’s very first title defence bout and against a man who overshadowed him with his hefty experience.
Mgidi, also a South African, was entering in his 27th bout and boasted 20 wins. His knockout power and lethalness can be judged from the fact that he has collected 15 of his total wins by knocking the opponent out cold.
This was the second time that Mgidi was brawling for the country’s apex divisional title. In his first attempt, Mzukisi got knocked out in the very first round by the jabs of Kaizer Mabuza.
Since then he has taken on just two pugilists basically newbie’s and collected comfortable wins by easily nailing them via knockouts. The bout kicked off and from the very first round, Yoyo showed impressive feats of pugilism and started grabbing the crowds
praise and motivation.
Mgidi strived extremely hard but Yoyo’s game plan and strategy was flawless which enabled him to pound Mgidi frequently by his powerful jabs. It was the sheer power and the aggressiveness of Yoyo’s attack that Mgidi twice got flattened on the ring floor.
The same scenario continued and Mgidi discovered that it is almost impossible for him to meet Yoyo’s agility, swift body movements, and footwork. During the fourth round, Mgidi got stunned by a huge hook that threw him on the ring floor.
This was the last time Mgidi fell on the ring floor and the bout referee finally declared the young Yoyo as the winner of the bout.
After the bout, Dowie Mzini, trainer Yoyo remarked, “We planned properly for this fight and everything worked well for us. We wanted the fight to go beyond the fourth round but Mgidi's corner intervened when they saw that he was getting hurt. It's a pity
that things didn't go according to plan during the fight. Mgidi failed to do what we planned at training.”
With this win Yoyo has improved to 14 wins with 10 via KO and Mgidi has received his fifth career and second knockout loss.
