What is your view of this new agenda? Will it change your agricultural practices?

Lots of rural kids have dumped 4H this year due to new rules.

  1. This could mean that i will have to raise my own meat chickens from eggs (or find an anti NAIS supplier of day old chicks) and will likely mean that i will have to slaughter them as the the state inspected place I use will almost certainly require ID number and my farm registration number. i believe i will be fine on grain as the guy i buy that from is anti NAIS. But if they tell him he can no longer certify his livestock as organic if he does not comply with NAIS I have a feeling he will comply rather than drop his certification as that would mean losing several large accounts for eggs for him.

So if that all happens I will no longer raise poultry and will stick with produce. This will not be a big problem for me as poultry makes up under 10% of my gross income.

  2. thats a toughie

  3. I am completely against the NAIS.  I'm a small farmer, and I raise meat goats, and meat rabbits.  I also own horses.

I've posted several times about how I'm anti-NAIS, and will not participate.

This time, I'm going to post on a subject rarely talked about.  The NAIS could actually lead to animal abuse.

Some states (can you believe this is the U.S.A.?) require Vetrinarians to tattle on farmers not participating in the NAIS (states where they have made it manditory).

So for farmers who are really against the NAIS, and simply will not participate, their animals cannot have Vetrinary care, since the Vetrinarian could loose their license if they do not rat these people out....you know, the 4H kid with a market lamb, or the old woman who milks two dairy goats.

Simply amazing.....sounds a whole lot more like communism, doesn't it?  People ratting each other out, because of the fear of the Government.

The NAIS is a horrible program.  There are already PLENTY of rules, laws, and regulations to protect consumers.  They are simply not efforced.  We don't need another program that drives small farmers out of business, and forces CHILDREN to register "their" farms (4H & FFA kids).

  4. I know a lot of farmers who are really pissed over it.  Most say that they won't comply and are willing to fight over it.  It sounds more like it is meant to drive out small farming operations or family growers.

  5. I am totally disgusted by it.  I will not go along with NAIS.  I have made my views known to my state, which at this time is still voluntary.   This, if made mandatory everywhere, will force out most if not all small holders.  It's only purpose is to do just that, keeps the factory farms/ranches profits up.
