I know some of you (ahmadiyya) think Buddha(PBUH) was a Prophet.

Even Zakir Naik thinks Buddha(PBUH) may have been a Prophet..so he can say Buddha (PBUH) predicted a future Buddha>>>>Muhammad (PBUH) coming....Astagfirullah.

It's fun studying Islam...anything goes, afterall we need to keep our deen kicking.

By the way has everyone started advertising the new Quran Translation copy that says Earth is EGG shaped, becos before it was spread out...please do so.

  1. Yes, there is extensive evidence that Guru Nanak was indeed a devout and practicing Muslim who worked hard to repair the bitter relations of Muslims and Hindus.  I'll provide those evidences momentarily.

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) found that the Guru Granth Sahib contains exhortations for the five daily prayers, the annual fasts, Zakat, and the Hajj. Other Sikh books show that Baba Nanak (ra) was wont to live in the company of Muslim saints, visiting the tombs of Muslim saints and spending his time in meditation, joining them in congregational prayers, performed Hajj, and visited Baghdad and the other holy places of Islam.

However, the most important discovery was a cloak (Chola) of Hazrat Baba Nanak (rh). On this cloak are written chapters and verses of the Holy Quran and the Kalima in arabic.

There are numerous evidences from the writings of Guru Nanek that he was a Muslim, but I will provide only a few here.

Let me make clear that it was indeed Hazrat Ahmad (as) who showed the world that Guru Nanek was indeed a Muslim and was not the founder of a new religion.

“Nanak said, 0: Rukn-ud-Din, hear from me the true reply: the saying of the Lord is written in the Book. That person will go to h**l who does not repeat the Kalima, who does not keep the thirty fasts, and does not say the five prayers, who eats what is not lawful for him. These shall receive the punishment and the fire of the bottomless pit shall be his abode.” (Janam Sakhi Bhai Bala, p. 193)

Here is another very important quote.

“The Quran is divided into thirty sections, proclaim thou, this Quran in the four corners of this world. Declare the glory of one name only for none other is an associate with me. Nanak proclaims the word of God that came to him, thou hast been granted the rank of Sheikh, so thou shouldst abolish the worship of gods and goddesses and the old Hindu idol – temples.” (Janam Sakhi Bhai Bala, p. 124)

Finally I present two final quotes to show that Guru Nanek was a Muslim, and had no intention on creating a new religion.

“Hindus utter irreverent wordings against Allah and His Messenger, while the truth is that they themselves are the inmates of Fire. One should say that only Allah and His Messenger are The Truth and nothing else.”  (Couplet from Janam Sakhi Bhai Bala, p. 271

“Those will achieve salvation who are the helpers and followers of the Holy Prophet.” (Janam Sakhi Bhai Bala, p. 139)

So it's pretty clear that Guru Nanek was a Muslim.  This was established with conviction by Hazrat Ahmad (as) over 100 years ago.

    Hope that helps Bro Omar!

  3. Dear readers,

I am new to Yahoo Q and A, and am pleased to find this brilliant thread.

First off, this being my first response, Peace unto all.

I, too, believe Guru Nanak was a Muslim. But unlike other Muslims of his day, rather than fuel the raging jealousies between rival Muslims and Hindus in the then undivided subcontinent, he labored to bring the often clashing religious cultures of Islam and Hinduism together. He was equally disdainful of professional piety in all its forms. This is the essence of true Islam, which, sadly is missing in most Muslims.

Guru Nanak was all those things - he was a Haji, he kept the Holy Quran by his side at all times, he wore a cloak embroidered beautifully with Qur'anic verses, including 'Laa ilaha illaha Muhammad ur Rasullah' (there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger), and always travelled with a pail of water which he used for ablution (wudhu) before performing worship. He was a great sage. Not just for Muslims and Hindus. But for all.

Fellow-feeling for the non-Muslim is the mark that has epitomized Muslim sufis and mystics. This is why they are always loved be people of rival faiths. So when Guru Nanak said "I am neither Hindu, nor Muslim" what he is saying is "I am not those corrupt Hindus, nor those corrupt Muslims". Be it noted, Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi, Islam's most beloved poet, said the same thing - but he was denouncing corruption, not Allah or Islam. Who would dare call him non-Muslim? Muhyuddin ibn' al-Arabi, the 'Sheikh al-Akbar' of Islam, too shunned religious chauvinism of Muslims, and glorified the true spirit Christ in his preaching so much so, that has was charged with converting to Christianity.

Dear Sikh friends, this is truly 'wahi guru ji ka khalsa', and 'wahi guru ji ke fateh.' (This is Guru Nanak's purity and this is his victory).

Allah says in the Holy Qur'an to study the histories of people and those who thwarted the guidance that He bestowed on them out of Grace. We are talking about salvation here. Nothing is more sacred. There is no reason to minimize the sincerity of the questioner.

It is my belief that all the worlds great religions were originally divinely inspired but later interpolated in the hands of its adherents. It is my belief and hope that all the worlds religions will find their reunion in Islam through Ahmadiyyat, which I humbly submit, is the revival of Islam after its age of darkness, as foretold by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Peace to all under God's sky

  9. It is recorded in History that Guru Nanak converted to Mulsim and performed Hajj. So all Sikhs brothers you should converted to Muslim as Sikh also believe in One God.

Name of Buddha is not mentioned in Quran but according to some scholars of Quran city name of Buddha is mentioned.

It is possibility that he is Prophet as Allah sent 124000 prophets from Adam to Muhammad (Mirza of Ahmadiyyas is not prophet of Allah).

  12. Assalamo Alaikum!

Yes, Baba Nanak was a Muslim.  The whole history of Sikhism shows that its founder, though born a Hindu, mixed with Muslims, joined in their prayers and performed other Islamic obligations, all in public. He wore none of the marks of Hindus upon him. On the other hand, he dressed like a Muslim and had all the insignia of a Muslim faqir on him. He passed his days with Muslim pirs and saints and ate and drank with them. It was a Muslim sufi he constantly turned to for advice and there is not a single instance in his life which indicated that he bowed his head to a Hindu pandit. There are many places associated with his name, where he is known to have performed Chillas, Nanak's chilla at Sirsa, a small town in the Punjab, is an example. (Chilla is an Islamic form of meditation). Travelling through Muslim countries he reached Mecca where he performed Haj (pilgrimage) and is also known to have visited the holy city of Medina. His choicest friend during these travels was a Muslim, Sheikh Farid, in whose company he passed twelve years of his life. Baba Nanak, while on pilgrimage, dressed like a pilgrim, carried with him a stick, Quran, a prayer mat and a water jug for performing ablution. Even his first four successors are represented in pictures as Muslims, carrying rosaries in their hands.

Guru Nanak also married in a Muslim family. This point is very important because no respectable Muslim family would have taken Nanak as a son-in-law, unless he was known to be a Muslim. Nanak lived in a country under Muslim rule where the marriage of a Muslim woman to a non-Muslim would on no account be tolerated. This clearly indicates that Guru Nanak was accepted as a Muslim by his contemporaries.

The Chola, or the cloak of Baba Nanak, is the holiest relic of the Guru and is preserved in Dera Baba Nanak, a small village in Gurdaspur District of the Punjab. This is a cloak which Nanak wore in his life-time and it is considered so sacred that his immediate followers took every care to keep it safe. The regard and reverence rendered to the Chola by the Sikh community is a testimony to the authenticity of the cloak. The words of Guru Nanak as contained in the Guru Granth Sahib (Sikh scriptures) were not collected until the time of Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru, and therefore cannot be relied upon as accurate particularly as Sikhism had by that time assumed an attitude of hostility towards Islam. But the Chola is clear from this charge, because it was handed down by Nanak himself and has come down to our times in its original condition. It is commonly alleged that verses from different scriptures in different languages are written on the Chola. But this is not true. The verses chosen for writing on the Chola are quotations from the Holy Quran as revealed by photographs recently taken. The religion followed by the man can be none other than Islam.

    Question

Qur’an says that Allah has made the earth for you as a carpet. This gives an indication that the earth is flat. Does this not contradict established modern science?

    --------------------------------------...

    Answer By Dr.Zakir Naik.

    1.    Earth made as a carpet

The question refers to a verse from the Qur’an in Surah Nuh:

"And Allah has made the earth for you as a carpet (spread out)."

    [Al-Qur’an 71:19]

But the sentence in the above verse is not complete. It continues in the next verse, explaining the previous verse. It says:

"That ye may go about therein, in spacious roads."

    [Al-Qur’an 71:20]

A similar message is repeated in Surah TaHa:

"He Who has made for you the earth like a carpet spread out; has enabled you to go about therein by roads (and channels)...."

    [Al-Qur’an 20:53]

The surface of the earth i.e. earth’s crust is less than 30 miles in thickness and is very thin as compared to the radius of the earth which is about 3750 miles. The deeper layers of the earth are very hot, fluid and hostile to any form of life. The earth’s crust is a solidified shell on which we can live. The Qur’an rightly refers to it like a carpet spread out, so that we can travel along its roads and paths.

    2.    Carpet can also be spread on other than an absolute flat surface

Not a single verse of the Qur’an says that the earth is flat. The Qur’an only compares the earth’s crust with a carpet. Some people seem to think that carpet can only be put on an absolute flat surface. It is possible to spread a carpet on a large sphere such as the earth. It can easily be demonstrated by taking a huge model of the earth’s globe covering it with a carpet.

Carpet is generally put on a surface, which is not very comfortable to walk on. The Qur’an describes the earth crust as a carpet, without which human beings would not be able to survive because of the hot, fluid and hostile environment beneath it. The Qur’an is thus not only logical, it is mentioning a scientific fact that was discovered by geologists centuries later.

    3.    Earth has been spread out

Similarly, the Qur’an says in several verses that the earth has been spread out.

"And We have spread out the (spacious) earth: how excellently We do spread out!"

    [Al-Qur’an 51:48]

Similarly the Qur’an also mentions in several other verses that the earth is an expanse:

"Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse"

    "And the mountains as pegs?"

    [Al-Qur’an 78:6-7]

None of these verses of the Qur’an contain even the slightest implication that the earth is flat. It only indicates that the earth is spacious and the reason for this spaciousness of the earth is mentioned. The Glorious Qur’an says:

"O My servants who believe! truly. spacious is My Earth: therefore serve ye Me –(And Me alone)!"

    [Al-Qur’an 29:56]

Therefore none can give the excuse, that he could not do good and was forced to do evil because of the surroundings and circumstances.

    4.     Earth is geospherical in shape

The Qur’an mentions the actual shape of the earth in the following verse:

"And we have made the earth egg shaped".

    [Al-Qur’an 79:30]

The Arabic word Dahaha means egg shaped. It also means an expanse. Dahaha is derived from Duhiya which specifically refers to the egg of an ostrich which is geospherical in shape, exactly like the shape of the earth.

Thus the Qur’an and modern established science are in perfect harmony.

    MUHAMMAD (PBUH) IN BUDDHIST SCRIPTURES:

    1. Buddha prophesised the advent of a Maitreya:

    A) Almost all Buddhist books contain this prophecy. It is in Chakkavatti Sinhnad Suttanta D. III, 76:

"There will arise in the world a Buddha named Maitreya (the benevolent one) a holy one, a supreme one, an enlightened one, endowed with wisdom in conduct, auspicious, knowing the universe:

"What he has realized by his own supernatural knowledge he will publish to this universe. He will preach his religion, glorious in its origin, glorious at its climax, glorious at the goal, in the spirit and the letter. He will proclaim a religious life, wholly perfect and thoroughly pure; even as I now preach my religion and a like life do proclaim. He will keep up the society of monks numbering many thousands, even as now I keep up a society of monks numbering many hundreds".

    B) According to Sacred Books of the East volume 35 pg. 225:

"It is said that I am not an only Buddha upon whom the leadership and order is dependent. After me another Buddha maitreya of such and such virtues will come. I am now the leader of hundreds, he will be the leader of thousands."

    C) According to the Gospel of Buddha by Carus pg. 217 and 218 (From Ceylon sources):

"Ananda said to the Blessed One, ‘Who shall teach us when thou art gone?'

And the Blessed one replied, 'I am not the first Buddha who came upon the earth nor shall I be the last. In due time another Buddha will arise in the world, a holy one, a supremely enlightened one, endowed with wisdom in conduct, auspicious, knowing the universe, an incomparable leader of men, a master of angels and mortals. He will reveal to you the same eternal truths, which I have taught you. He will preach his religion, glorious in its origin, glorious at the climax and glorious at the goal. He will proclaim a religious life, wholly perfect and pure such as I now proclaim. His disciples will number many thousands while mine number many hundreds.'

Ananda said, 'How shall we know him?'

The Blessed one replied, 'He will be known as Maitreya'."

    (i) The Sanskrit word ‘Maitreya’ or its equivalent in Pali ‘Metteyya’ means loving, compassionate, merciful and benevolent. It also means kindness and friendliness, sympathy, etc. One Arabic word which is equivalent to all these words is ‘Rahmat’. In Surah Al-Anbiya:

"We sent thee not, but as a mercy for all creatures."

    [Al-Qur’an 21:107]

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was called the merciful, which is ‘Maitri’.

(ii) The words Mercy and Merciful are mentioned in the Holy Qur’an no less than 409 times.

(iii) Every chapter of the Glorious Qur’an, except Chapter 9, i.e. Surah Taubah begins with the beautiful formula, 'Bismillah Hir-Rahman Nir-Rahim', which means 'In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful'.

(iv) The Word Muhammad is also spelt as ‘Mahamet’ or ‘Mahomet’ and in various other ways in different languages. The word ‘Maho’ or ‘Maha’ in Pali and Sanskrit mean Great and Illustrious and ‘Metta’ means mercy. Therefore ‘Mahomet’ means ‘Great Mercy’.[Dr.Zakir Naik , President of Islamic Research Foundation]
