We know, or should, if we understand economics, that demand is a large part of the rising cost of fuel, which has, for the first time, breached $4/gallon average in the U.S.
When it comes to fuel consumption, auto racing is the big money sports equivalent of joyriding. Lots of gasoline being burned and no one actually going anywhere except around and around in circles. Roughly 175,000 total miles will be driven in NASCAR races in 2008 alone, which will use roughly $500,000 in fuel.
And that doesn't count the fuel used for the vehicles of race fans who often drive considerably longer distances for auto races than other sports, and in much larger quantities.
And this is only one of many motorsports categories. By supporting, promoting and patronizing motorsports, fans lend credence, support, encouragement and approval to the use of this fuel, the toll it takes on the environment and the strain it puts on national/global fuel supplies.
Are you willing to take that responsibility?
