NASCAR runs fuel injection test rides at Kentucky Speedway – NASCAR news
NASCAR has run its test session for the new fuel injection engines at the Kentucky Speedway.
The test rides were conducted during the race weekend at Kentucky.
All five engine builders in the NASCAR stock car racing championship tested the newly implemented fuel injection systems. It was the first official test by NASCAR organisers.
NASCAR vice president for competition, Robin Pemberton said, “You have to remember, as far as the fuel injection goes, many of the teams have been testing a form of fuel injection over the past two years, two and a half years anyway. A lot of our engine
builders out in the field, they do build engines for other forms, other leagues.”
The teams included Hendrick Motorsports, Earnhardt Childress Racing Engines, Roush-Yates Racing Engines, Toyota Racing Development and Penske Engines. The teams appointed test drivers for the fuel injection test runs with all the cars in the field.
Pemberton added that the engine builders and teams have previous experiences of building fuel injection engines. He said the feedback from the testing is problem free at the moment.
Along with the test, the Sprint Cup practice was also taking place. Kentucky will host its first NASCAR Sprint Cup race as previously it has hosted Nationwide and CWTS races.
Mike Skinner said, “I drove both today, as you know, and on the race track at first you could tell a lot of difference, but we didn't have this thing worked out. Each map change that they've made - they went backwards, they went forwards, they went backwards
and they went forward - the last three runs have all been forward.”
After some tests and comparative runs, test driver Skinner said that there is no significant difference in both engines but the performance with a few tweaks makes it exceptional to carburettors.
The test practice was not new for the teams as they have been testing these systems for more than two years now. The McLaren Electronics were tested and tuned to cope up with its demands and get optimum performance.
