  1. What do you mean "good" job? One that doesn't require work? One that has no responsibility? One where you can zone out and not think for a few hours? Then, no, it's not a good job. You have billions of dollars of equipment under your control... not to mention tons of ordinance. You mess up and guys are going to die and planes are going to be lost.

It really doesn't make any difference what job you get in the Navy. You get out of it what you put into it. You fool around and s***w up, you'll never advance and you'll leave shortly -- and probably blame the Navy. You work your tail off and do a good job, you'll advance and maybe make it a career.

I joined in 1960 with a degree in Math. When it came time to extend for E-6, somebody dusted off the degree and recommended me for OCS. I spent 25 years in the Navy. I retired at 45, got two more degrees on the GI Bill, purchased a house with a VA-insured loan (it's paid for now), and with my military background, management experience, and recent security clearance, got a job managing government projects on the West Coast. Spent 12 yeas with that company and retired again at 60. Today I have practically no expenses. I'm making about $60K a year for getting up in the morning. I travel just about anywhere in the world for free. My medical and dental services are free. And, in a few minutes I'm going to pick up free concert tickets to a local theater (courtesy of the VA).

A lot of guys my age are corporate executives, working 50-60 hours a week in those 500 square foot, glassed in offices way up in those tall office buildings. In their few free moments I'll bet they dream about doing what I did in the service when I was young enough to enjoy it... and maybe some of the stuff I do every day. Oh, those concert tickets will cost those guys $75 a pop.

  2. MOST Yellow-shirts you see there on the flight deck of the carrier are OFFICERS... the remainder are usually 2nd, 1st Class, or Chief Petty Officers.

I'm guessing You're looking at the ABH (Aviation Boatswains Mate, Handler) rating.  Just be prepared for LONG HOURS, HARD SWEATY work, and a few years of GRUNT work and hard training before YOU are qualified to be out directing an AC.  MOST ABH's START as "Blue Shirts".

Was a qualified Yellow-shirt as a Helicopter LSE on "small-boys"... destroyers and frigates.  My rating was AW (Aviation Warfare Systems Operator) for the first 9 years.

  3. Do research on ALL jobs.  You will be surprised when you get to MEPS how many jobs you don't get to choose from and if you only choose one job you want and it isn't open the day you go you screwed yourself out of doing research before you go to MEPS.  You will only get a about 6 or 7 jobs to choose from based on the needs of the Navy, availability of the job and jobs that match your ASVAB score along with physical requirements of jobs.  Be open minded and think about ALL the jobs they offer you while you are MEPS.  If you don't know about a certain job ask the jobs classifier to explain it to you as well as give you the jobs description card.  READ the description and then decide.  ABH is a good job but you need to understand what the job is all about.  You will be on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier or hangar bay all day regardless of the weather conditions.  It can be in excess of 100 degrees everyday if you are deployed to the gulf.  This is your working conditions.  If you do not mind hot weather go for it.  If you cannot deal with hot weather ABH is a fun and exciting job but you are going to be super hot all day.  These are the kind of things you need to know about.  Just knowing what a job does is only part of the knowledge you need to know.  You also need to know the daily life of your job.  Have your recruiter be nearby when you go pick your job and when  the classifier gives you your job choices, take the list and go talk to your recruiter and they can help you understand what each job really does day to day.  Good luck.
