NBA Draft 2010 : Scouts are paying attention to Kansas Sherron Collins
Sherron Collins is definitely in best shape of his life as he prepares for the upcoming NBA draft. He had lost 11 pounds; cutting his body fats from 13.5% to just 10.2 %. He still sports a strong and sturdy built that is far better than his college days.
During the scrimmages, he has impressed scouts and fans with his marvelous shooting, passing and shot creation skills. He is very good in running pick-and-rolls, completing drive-and-dishes, and converting three pointers.
On the defensive end, he also played well and showed that he can properly utilize his size to defend harder and prevent opponents from getting inside the paint. It cannot be denied that his size can also create some drawbacks in his entry in the NBA; but he showed fantastically that he can definitely adjust to whatever role will be given to him. He has many other skills that can be his boost in the NBA draft.
Aside from his nice shooting, he can also handle the ball well with his quickness and explosiveness. His stocky frame is also a big factor in his game. He has also improved his elevated jumper with his off the dribble moves and pull ups.
Collins has also maintained good body control wherein he can stop and pull up anytime when it is needed. Do not be surprised when you see him spot up from deep side of the court because this is one of his specialties. This 5’11 point guard has also a good eye when it comes to spotting open space where he will beat you on the open floor. Above all these strengths, he is a born leader with his innate scorer’s mentality being a clutch shooter.
Having all these in mind, Collins was predicted to be drafted late in the first round. On the other side of it, he has also obvious weaknesses that include his height that only stands at 5’11. Instead of being a solid playmaker, he is much of a scorer to his team. His major disadvantage is that he would not be able to play the number 2 position in the NBA.
On the defensive end, he is frequently beaten off the dribble by taller guards. He cannot also guard a number 2 guard with his height. He also has a tough time finishing the paint because of his size.
Aspects of his game that he needs to improve include his shooting from deep due to his potential inability to convert around the rim against taller and bigger players. He also needs to improve his passing abilities to be considered as a valuable guard in the NBA.
There is no doubt that Collins has played consistent basketball in his college yeas. Yet, he still needs to improve his orchestrating skills as a point guard if he wants to find a place in the NBA.
His leadership and scorer’s mentality will be the main points in the upcoming NBA draft. It will not be easy for any player to adjust from amateur to professional league; just like all of them, Collins needs to exert extra effort to be able to climb a notch higher.
Having in mind the success of Nate Robinson and Earl Boykins, it is not impossible that Collins will also go a long way if he will just take extra mile in improving all his skills.
Although he only stands under 6-foot and weighs at 200 lbs, he can still make up for these disadvantages through proper training and proper attitude. In the end, his great will to make it in the NBA can tell the scouts that he is worth drafting.
