NBA Draft John Wall selected first
In what was a move expected by everyone in the business the Washington Wizards selected Kentucky point guard John Wall as the first overall pick of the 2010 NBA draft.
The Wizards never hid the fact that Wall was their target and on Thursday night Washington selected the player they believe will be the face of the franchise for years to come.
Wall himself always expected to be selected first overall and says pressure shouldn’t play a part in his performances
"I feel like I had pressure since I became No. 1 in high school and was one of the top players," Wall said.
"I always got there hungry wanting to fight hard and compete in every game, so when I step on the court I'm going to take on any challenge there."
In 37 games for Kentucky, Wall averaged 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.8 steals.
The Philadelphia 76ers selected national player of the year Evan Turner with the second overall pick, a decision their fans applauded chanting “Evan Turner! Evan Turner!" when his name was announced.
Turner will team up with Andre Iguodala in Philadelphia which could be a potent threat on the offensive end and Turner understands the pressures of being drafted so high.
"I don't have any pressure. I have a lot of demands of myself. If Philly expects me to be great, then we have a mutual understanding,” Turner said
The New Jersey Nets, who finished with the worst record in the NBA last season, selected 18-year-old Derrick Favors out of Georgia Tech. Favours was expected to go third but the player himself wasn’t sure where he would end up.
"I pretty much knew John was going to one and Evan was going two, but I had no idea I was going to the Nets, and when they called me I was just excited," Favors said.
The Minnesota Timberwolves added a nice addition to their roster selecting Wesley Johnson with the fourth pick. Johnson, a small forward, will team up with Al Jefferson, Kevin Love and Johnny Flynn, in what could be a good Timberwolves team.
The Sacramento Kings completed the top-five selections by taking Wall’s teammate DeMarcus Cousins. Cousins was one of the most impressive players in college basketball last year but with concerns over his attitude, teams were unwilling to risk a top three pick on the forward.
