NBA Monday Roundup: Phoenix Suns and Chicago Bulls win - (Part 1)
Ten National Basketball Association (NBA) teams went head-to-head on 28 February, 2010. The Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets, Boston Celtics and Sacramento Kings came out on top in their games.
Here is the review of the action from Monday night.
Phoenix Suns 104 – New Jersey Nets 103
The Phoenix Suns extended their winning streak to four games with a hard-fought 104-103 victory over the New Jersey Nets at Prudential Centre on Monday night.
Marcin Gortat scored a team-high 17 points, while Hakim Warrick and Robin Lopez added 16 had 14 points respectively, to help Phoenix win their 14th road game of the 2010-11 season. Steve Nash had an impressive night with 10 points and 15 assists
for the Suns, who have won 11 of their last 14 games.
Brook Lopez came off the bench to have a productive game as he scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the woeful Nets. Anthony Morrow added 22 points while Kris Humphries played well with 16 points and 15 rebounds for New Jersey, who
lost their 43rd contest of the season.
The game was of great importance for Deron Williams as it was his home debut. Williams wowed Nets fans with a season-high 18 assists and 13 points. Phoenix held the host team to 31 percent shooting from the field in the first quarter to take a 26-23 advantage
after 12 minutes.
The Nets then got it going offensively early in the second quarter to make the score a respectable one. New Jersey’s Sasha Vujacic sank a running heave from just inside midcourt to make it a one-point game at 35-34 with nine minutes to go in the second.
However, the Suns managed to maintain a single-point lead at 52-51 going into half time.
New Jersey were able to keep the game close throughout the third quarter, but Gortat's lay-up shot and dunk extended the Suns advantage to 69-66, heading into the final stanza. The Nets came out strongly in the fourth quarter and trimmed the deficit to make
it a one-point contest at 95-96 with just two second to go in the quarter. Morrow's free throw in the last second pushed the game into overtime.
The Suns held on down the stretch and got a breath-taking three-pointer form Channing Frye with six seconds left to seal the victory.
Chicago Bulls 105 – Washington Wizards 77
The Chicago Bulls stretched their winning streak to three games, by thrashing the Washington Wizards 105-77 at the Verizon Centre on Monday night.
Derrick Rose and Luol Deng played well as they registered 21 points apiece in a game in which the Bulls never trailed. Carlos Boozer had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Chicago, who won their 15th road game of the season.
Andray Blatche did all he could as he led Washington with 15 points and 11 rebounds, who have now lost six consecutive games. Nick Young had 14 points while Josh Howard added 10 points for the Wizards, who have lost 16 of their last 17 games.
Chicago led from the opening minutes and managed to take a 25-20 lead into the second. The Bulls continued to play offensively throughout the second quarter, and extended their lead to 50-37 going into half time.
Chicago took control of the game with a 15-4 run late in the third quarter, taking a 78-57 lead into the fourth. Trailing by 21-point after three quarters, the Wizards never got closer than 16 points in the fourth quarter.
