NBA Recap: Sacramento Kings beat Phoenix Suns 113-108
Carl Landry posted 20 points and grabbed 10 boards in a reserve role, as the Sacramento Kings beat the Phoenix Suns 113-108 on Sunday night.
Tyreke Evans notched 21 points and dished out seven assists for Sacramento, which started a seven-game road trip on Sunday. Samuel Dalembert, who played in place of DeMarcus Cousins, scored 18 points and pulled down 15 boards in Kings’ first win in Phoenix
in 11 tries.
Donte Greene poured in 19 points off the bench for Kings, who snapped a five-game skid.
Cousins, a rookie forward/centre averaging less than 14 points per game, did not play against Phoenix because of an altercation with Greene following Sacramento’s loss to Oklahoma City on Saturday night.
"Tonight we pushed through and beat a good team on the road, especially with all the turmoil, or whatever you want to call it, with DeMarcus," Sacramento head coach Paul Westphal said. "This was quite a pulling together of our team. It was great to see."
Steve Nash scored 22 points and 18 assists for Phoenix, which lost a three-game winning streak. Marcin Gortat had 20 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for Suns, who lost for the second time in eight games.
Phoenix took a 29-21 lead with a 22-4 outburst in the first quarter. After 12 minutes of the action, Phoenix held a 32-30 lead. Kings cut Suns’ lead to 48-47 with less than three minutes remaining in the first half when Landry snagged a steal and made two
free throws.
Phoenix made it, 57-47, when Channing Frye notched the first five in a 9-0 surge that finished on Robin Lopez’ steal and fast break dunk. Darnell Jackson hit a three-pointer to pull Kings to 57-50 at the halftime.
Sacramento outscored Phoenix, 28-24, in the third quarter to cut their deficit to 81-78.
Kings opened the fourth period on a 15-2 run to go in front for good. Dalembert poured in eight points during the stretch and Greene capped it with a trey to make it 93-83 with six minutes left in the final period.
Phoenix was down five, 107-102, on Channing Frye’s layup with 38 seconds remaining. Nash missed a 3-point attempt and Kings led 109-104 with less than 28 seconds left. In the final moments, Dalembert and Beno Udrih hit two free throws to seal the victory.
"I think that tonight was just one of those nights that we really needed it and things just didn't go our way. I think it was a tough game and they played hard and I think they just played their game. We knew they were going to attack the rim and create
opportunities for their big guys. We just need to do a better job of getting the ball." Frye said.
