NBA Round-Up (Part III)
Golden State Warriors 117 - Sacramento Kings 109
The Golden State Warriors held on for a 117-109 win over the Sacramento Kings, following a furious comeback in the fourth quarter at the Arco Arena.
Monta Ellis played fantastically and led the Warriors with 36 points; nine of which came in overtime. Reggie Williams registered 24 points for Warriors, who won for only the fourth time on the road this season. Dorell Wright had 17, and David Lee added 15
points and 12 rebounds in the season’s tenth victory.
Beno Udrih led the Kings with 34 points, while team-mate Carl Landry contributed 22 points and 10 rebounds off the bench in the Kings 21st defeat of the season. Tyreke Evans had 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Kings, who have now lost six
games in a row. Both teams started sluggishly, however the Warriors found their rhythm offensively later on, and established 26-18 lead heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Kings fought hard but were only able to cut the deficit to seven points. Some sloppy basketball from the Warriors then allowed the Kings to get within a point of their opponents at 49-48. Sacramento continued their sizzling performance
into the third quarter, and scored 36 points while holding their opponents to just 21. The Warriors committed six turnovers, which led to numerous easy opportunities for the Kings to take an 84-70 lead.
Early in the fourth quarter it looked like the Warriors would slip to another loss, but they began frustrating the Kings on defence, forced 10 turnovers to eliminate a 16-point deficit, and took the game into overtime. The Warriors outscored Sacramento 32-18
in the fourth. With 44 seconds remaining, Ellis added two free throws to seal the victory for Warriors.
David Lee said after the game, "What changed the game for us was defence. We made stops and got some lay-ups at the other end. We got on a real hot streak at the end of the game. We needed a road win; we had to get this game."
Milwaukee Bucks 98 - Los Angeles Lakers 79
The short-handed Milwaukee Bucks trounced the Los Angeles Lakers 98-79 at Staples Center on Tuesday night.
Earl Boykins scored a season-high 22 points, and John Salmons added 20 points in the Bucks 11th victory of the season. Andrew Bogut scored 15 points, and Ersan Ilyasova had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Bucks, who broke the Lakers' five-game winning
streak.
For the Lakers, Kobe Bryant led the scoring with 21 points, before been ejected. Pau Gasol added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers in one of their worst defeats of the season.
In the first quarter, both teams maintained same velocity and played offensively, and the Bucks slowly build a three-point lead at the end of first quarter 25-22. The Bucks and the Lakers continued playing their attacking game in the second quarter, and
went into the half time break at 50-46.
The Lakers went big and Boykins came up even bigger in the third quarter. Boykins drilled a three-pointer on the right wing to give the Bucks a 68-63 lead. Boykins' spurt started a 9-3 run to close out the third quarter. The Bucks outscored the Lakers in
the final period by 26-13, and sealed their 11th win of the season.
Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles told reporter after the game, "Both ends were good for us, so I don't want to pick one. In the second half, we were as good as we've been all year on the defensive end. To hold that team to 33 points, and 13 in the fourth quarter,
that's a difficult task."
